1973-74 O-Pee-Chee California Golden Seals #95 Team Checklist Light Back Variation

Description

1973-74 O-Pee-Chee California Golden Seals #95 Team Checklist Light Back Variation For variation hunters and California Golden Seals fanatics, this 1973-74 O-Pee-Chee California Golden Seals #95 Team Checklist Light Back Variation is the prize of the sheet, a documented stock variation that commands a premium among master set builders and turns a simple checklist into a true talking piece. This is the same front as its dark back cousin with ten Seals players’ headshots stacked in two columns of five under the bold vertical CALIFORNIA GOLDEN SEALS ribbon and the same vivid red border that defines 1973-74 O-Pee-Chee, yet the back stock tells a different story. As noted during intake, position 9 is the light back while all other eight cards in this sheet are dark stock, a known O-Pee-Chee print run anomaly from the 1973-74 season where the factory used lighter oatmeal cardboard on a small portion of the print, creating a scarcer light version of certain numbers including checklist 95. Collectors who study O-Pee-Chee know light backs are harder to find and often more desirable than dark backs, particularly for checklists that were already low on survival due to kids marking them. The back content remains TEAM AND PLAYER RECORDS and RECORDS DE L’EQUIPE ET DES JOUEURS with Stanley Cup count zero, regular season records and individual marks like Most Victories 69 by Norm Ferguson and scoring feats by Ted Hampson, a fascinating encapsulation of the short-lived Seals history in one bilingual panel. Culturally the Seals are hot again thanks to retro branding and NHL talk of expansion nostalgia, and owning both dark and light variations of their team checklist is a flex few can claim. This is a genuine Canadian O-Pee-Chee bilingual back card, printed in Canada, clearly showing PRINTED IN CANADA O. P. C. along bottom, it is not a Topps US version and not a puzzle back but a records back in its scarce light stock form. Front centering is roughly 60/40 favoring right with minor tilt, red border shows light edge wear at top and bottom with tiny white ticks at corners, corners are softly rounded with top right showing minimal white, face collage remains crisp with all ten headshots legible and no surface indentations or marks. The back is definitively the light oatmeal cardboard variation, noticeably paler than the dark brown of the other eight backs in the photo, with orange-brown headers that pop more against the light stock, print is sharp, no pen checks, no staining, light uniform toning only. No creases, no wrinkles, no crease at the checklist center. The conservative grade reflects consistent soft corners and border chipping that prevents higher technical grades, but eye appeal is strong and variation rarity offsets condition concerns for serious O-Pee-Chee variety collectors seeking this exact 1973-74 O-Pee-Chee California Golden Seals #95 Team Checklist Light Back Variation from Alex Collect.
