1972 O-Pee-Chee Joe Theismann #130 Pro Action Toronto Argonauts The 1972 O-Pee-Chee Joe Theismann #130 Pro Action Toronto Argonauts card delivers a genuine game-action image of one of the most recognizable quarterbacks to begin his professional career in Canada. Theismann appears amid a crowded live play while the glowing yellow PRO ACTION header and vivid red frame provide one of the set’s most distinctive designs. Unlike the team-grouped portraits that make up most of the release, this card belongs to the fourteen-card Pro Action finale numbered 118 through 131. That subset gives collectors an unusually candid look at CFL competition in an era when posed field photographs dominated football cards. Card #130 has long been identified in hobby checklists and the graded-card market as a Joe Theismann Pro Action subject, making it considerably more recognizable than a typical uncaptioned action card. The dark, high-contrast stadium photograph is part of the original production aesthetic and gives the scene an almost cinematic atmosphere. Joe Theismann arrived in Toronto after an exceptional career at Notre Dame, where he set numerous school passing records, earned All-America honours and finished second in voting for the 1970 Heisman Trophy. The Miami Dolphins selected him in the fourth round of the 1971 NFL draft, but he signed with the Argonauts and immediately led Toronto to the Grey Cup as a rookie. He threw for 2,440 yards and 17 touchdowns in that first CFL season, earned East All-Star recognition and brought star power to a club making its first championship appearance since 1952. Across three Toronto seasons, Theismann developed the mobility, toughness and improvisational style that later defined his Washington career. In the NFL he became a two-time Pro Bowler, was named the league’s Most Valuable Player for the 1983 season and guided Washington to victory in Super Bowl XVII. He later became a familiar television football analyst, expanding his name recognition far beyond card collecting. Because his standard 1972 O-Pee-Chee player card is #37, this separate Pro Action issue offers collectors a second Theismann card from the same important CFL set and a compelling companion piece. This original card is ungraded and has been evaluated from the supplied front-and-back scans while inside a protective nine-pocket sleeve. The front shows saturated red and yellow ink with the complete PRO ACTION title and border intact. Centering is respectable, with a mild shift that leaves one white margin slightly narrower and a small vertical registration difference. The corners have light-to-moderate softening, most noticeably at the upper-right and lower-left, and the side edges show fibrous rough-cut texture with tiny white nicks. Numerous small pale specks are visible across the dark photograph, red frame and title area. Some are likely print or card-surface defects, while fine curved lines and reflections may belong to the plastic sleeve. The inherently dark game photo has limited player detail, but this is characteristic of the printed image rather than evidence of modern fading. The back retains strong green-and-blue colour over evenly age-toned stock. It displays small scattered white flecks, minor edge roughness and modest corner rounding, but remains cleanly readable. No definite crease, paper wrinkle, tear, writing, pinhole or heavy stain is visible. The reverse is an authentic Canadian O-Pee-Chee bilingual English/French “Test Your Football I. Q.” back asking for the CFL’s best career punting average; the upside-down answer identifies Joe Zuger at 45.5 yards per punt. It is a Football IQ trivia back, not a puzzle back. Raw Grade Estimate: VG-EX
