1972-73 O-Pee-Chee Jerry Korab #285 Rookie Card Chicago Black Hawks
$10.00
Long before he became a household name in Buffalo, Jerry Korab was already “King Korab” on the south side of Chicago, and this 1972-73 O-Pee-Chee Jerry Korab #285 rookie card is the very first O-Pee-Chee cardboard ever issued for the hard-hitting, hard-shooting blueliner. Korab would soon be dealt to the Buffalo Sabres, where he blossomed into an All-Star defenseman and one of the most feared two-way players of the 1970s, ranking among the franchise’s all-time leaders in games played and becoming a cornerstone of the Sabres’ first great era alongside Gilbert Perreault and Rene Robert. 1972-73 O-Pee-Chee Jerry Korab #285 Rookie Card Chicago Black Hawks
Long before he became a household name in Buffalo, Jerry Korab was already "King Korab" on the south side of Chicago, and this 1972 O-Pee-Chee Jerry Korab #285 rookie card is the very first O-Pee-Chee cardboard ever issued for the hard-hitting, hard-shooting blueliner. The smiling head-and-shoulders portrait against the blue studio background captures a 23-year-old on the verge of stardom, while the back bio celebrates the bruising checks and booming slapshot that made him a fan favourite at the Chicago Stadium, including the famous 1971 open-ice hit that reportedly shattered an opponent's stick along with his composure. Korab would soon be dealt to the Buffalo Sabres, where he blossomed into an All-Star defenseman and one of the most feared two-way players of the 1970s, ranking among the franchise's all-time leaders in games played and becoming a cornerstone of the Sabres' first great era alongside Gilbert Perreault and Rene Robert. That long and celebrated career gives this rookie card real lifetime value for both Chicago and Buffalo collectors, and as a third-series number from the 210 to 289 run it is somewhat scarcer than the early series cards on this sheet. The card belongs to the 340-card 1972-73 O-Pee-Chee set, the biggest hockey release the company had produced to that date, framed in the classic tan woodgrain border with the yellow name bar and circular Black Hawks crest. The reverse is the genuine Canadian O-Pee-Chee bilingual back with English and French text side by side, the stick-splintering cartoon and the career record table, so there is no mistaking it for the American Topps version, and it is not a puzzle back. the front is centered nearly perfectly at 50/50, the corners remain mostly sharp with only a faint touch of fuzz at the top left, the right edge shows light wear consistent with light handling, and the glossy surface shows no creases, wrinkles or scratches, while the bilingual back is clean with strong orange ink and no staining. Grading conservatively for the faint corner fuzz and edge wear, the card lands at a raw estimate of EX 5, a solid honest grade for a rookie card of a future All-Star that would cost far more in a slab.
