Description

1972 O-Pee-Chee Garney Henley #3 Hamilton Tiger-Cats CFL Hall of Fame MVP Presenting a true grail for Hamilton collectors, this 1972 O-Pee-Chee Garney Henley #3 Hamilton Tiger-Cats CFL Hall of Fame MVP card captures a living legend at the peak of his remarkable transformation. Garney Henley is arguably the greatest two way player in Tiger-Cats history and one of the greatest ever in the Canadian Football League, a South Dakota native who came to Hamilton in 1960 as a defensive back after a brief tryout with the Green Bay Packers and stayed for sixteen seasons. He was a CFL All-Star for ten consecutive years from 1963 to 1972, first as a lockdown defensive back with 59 career interceptions still the franchise record and later as a dynamic wide receiver. The 1972 season was his masterpiece, at age 36 he was switched to flanker full time to better utilize his speed and hands, and he responded by winning the CFL's Most Outstanding Player Award and earning All-Canadian honors as a receiver while helping Hamilton win the Grey Cup. He played in seven Grey Cup games and won four championships in 1963, 1965, 1967 and 1972, and his number 26 is now retired alongside Angelo Mosca and Bernie Faloney, honored again in 2025 for the fiftieth anniversary of his final season. Inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1979 and voted the sixth greatest player in CFL history in a 2006 TSN poll, Henley remains an icon whose 216 games rank second in team history. This card shows him in his familiar number 26 with the bright yellow border that makes 1972 O-Pee-Chee so collectible, a serious portrait that reflects his veteran leadership. The back is the authentic Canadian O-Pee-Chee bilingual back with English and French text, cartoon Perfect Back With Hamilton, blue and green ink, printed in Canada, not a puzzle back, with biography noting his All-Canadian Star status. Front centering is about 60/40 top to bottom with yellow borders slightly heavier at bottom, corners show light softening especially lower left and upper right but no major fraying, edges have minor chipping typical of yellow borders but retain brightness, surface has no creases and retains gloss with good color, back shows even toning with clean blue frame and no writing, slight corner wear visible on lower edge. As a Hall of Fame MVP card from a condition sensitive set, this example offers outstanding eye appeal despite minor age wear. Grade Estimate: VG-EX 4.5
