Description

1972 O-Pee-Chee CFL Ron Lancaster #79 CFL Hall of Fame Quarterback Saskatchewan Roughriders This is the key name on the sheet. The 1972 O-Pee-Chee CFL Ron Lancaster #79 puts one of the finest passers Canadian football has produced at the exact moment he moved from Ottawa to Saskatchewan and claimed the league's top player award. O-Pee-Chee's 132-card set was the last CFL issue of its generation, sold in ten-cent wax packs of eight cards with bubble gum, arranged team by team, with Lancaster opening the Roughriders block at number 79. Modern buyers chase the set for Joe Theismann's rookie, but the veteran Hall of Famers, and Lancaster in the Canadian Football Hall of Fame is the marquee among them, are what make a Riders sequence a real collection rather than a checklist project. The back bio reads like a résumé. Ron came to Saskatchewan from the Ottawa Rough Riders, where he had already been an All-Star, and won the Schenley Award as the CFL's most outstanding player in 1970, a line the French text repeats. The stat box hides the best trivia, the Wittenberg College credit with the cartoon gag that he could not crack the football team there, because Lancaster arrived in Canada as a basketball star and taught himself pro football, then retired holding the CFL's career passing records and later became a broadcaster and coach beloved across both leagues. He would lead the Riders to the 1972 Grey Cup, the title game Hamilton won 13-10, a heartbreak that only raises his standing in this franchise's lore. the front is glossy and vivid with near-sharp corners, the red ROUGHRIDERS banner complete, and a faint vertical line through the right photo field that is most likely a sleeve or scanner artifact; grading conservatively anyway. Left edge shows one short rub mark low in the border, centering is a touch right. The reverse has bold blue ink, clean bilingual paragraphs, and a handful of storage freckles. This is the authentic Canadian O-Pee-Chee bilingual back, not a puzzle back. We estimate EX-MT 5, a star in a price range that stays honest about a 54-year-old raw card. Grade Estimate: EX-MT 5
