Description

1972 O-Pee-Chee CFL John Helton #57 Hall of Fame Calgary Stampeders The 1972 O-Pee-Chee CFL John Helton #57 Hall of Fame Calgary Stampeders card showcases a dominant defensive lineman just as he was emerging as one of the Canadian Football League's defining stars. Helton appears in Calgary's red number 77 uniform against a soft stadium backdrop, surrounded by the set's vibrant green frame and tall yellow team lettering. This bold design makes the card an eye-catching vintage single, while its place in O-Pee-Chee's 132-card 1972 CFL release gives it strong appeal to Canadian set builders. The timing is especially significant because the issue followed Calgary's victory in the 1971 Grey Cup and preceded Helton's selection as the CFL's Most Outstanding Lineman in 1972. An Arizona State standout, Helton joined Calgary in 1969 and quickly became the anchor of a formidable defensive front. He played with the Stampeders through 1978 before completing his career with Winnipeg from 1979 through 1982. Across 219 games in 14 seasons, Helton was an all-star in nearly every campaign. He earned repeated Western and league honours, won the 1972 Most Outstanding Lineman Award, then received the CFL's Most Outstanding Defensive Player Award in 1974. In the 1971 Grey Cup, Calgary's defence pressured Toronto quarterback Joe Theismann throughout a tense 14 to 11 win, delivering the franchise its first championship in 23 years. Helton's speed, persistence and ability to pursue plays from the defensive line made him a benchmark at his position. He entered the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1986 and was later recognized among the greatest players in league history. The reverse is a Canadian O-Pee-Chee bilingual text back with English and French descriptions, not a puzzle back. It identifies card number 57, his Arizona State background and his all-Canadian status, and features a period cartoon emphasizing his knack for making the right call against opposing teams. The photographed example retains vivid colour, a sharp central image and an apparently clean surface with no obvious crease, wrinkle, writing, wax stain, paper loss or puncture. The corners show light touches rather than heavy rounding, with minor softening most visible at the upper left and lower left. Small areas of white border roughness and slight edge chipping are present, consistent with factory cutting and normal handling. Centering is attractive overall, though the green frame sits a little high and shows a modest side-to-side imbalance. The back has normal age toning, light corner rub and tiny edge flecks while its blue and green print remains bold. Fine surface issues may be obscured by the sleeve, so the card is not represented as professionally graded. A conservative EX-MT 6 estimate balances the strong visual presentation against the minor edge, corner and centering limitations. This is a desirable Hall of Fame card with championship context, ideal for Calgary Stampeders collections, defensive great displays or a carefully assembled 1972 O-Pee-Chee CFL set. Grade Estimate: EX-MT 6
