1972 O-Pee-Chee CFL Joe Forzani #61 Grey Cup Champion Calgary Stampeders

Description

1972 O-Pee-Chee CFL Joe Forzani #61 Grey Cup Champion Calgary Stampeders The 1972 O-Pee-Chee CFL Joe Forzani #61 Grey Cup Champion Calgary Stampeders card brings together classic Canadian card design, championship history and one of Calgary football's best-known family names. Forzani is pictured in the red number 73 uniform, his portrait filling the black-bordered image area beneath the large Stampeders wordmark. The vivid green and yellow design makes this an immediately recognizable piece from O-Pee-Chee's 132-card 1972 CFL set, issued in the season after Calgary defeated Toronto for the Grey Cup. It is an excellent entry point for collectors interested in vintage Canadian football, the Stampeders' breakthrough era or players who helped establish deep local ties to the club. A Calgary native and Utah State product, Joe Forzani joined the Stampeders in 1968 after being selected by the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL draft. He played linebacker and defensive end for Calgary through 1975, appearing in 122 regular-season games. His career included 13 interceptions, 10 opposing fumble recoveries and a 40-yard interception return for a touchdown in his final season. During the 1971 championship campaign, Forzani recorded four interceptions and recovered three opposition fumbles as part of a defence that carried Calgary through a difficult schedule and into the title game. The Stampeders beat the Toronto Argonauts 14 to 11 in the rain at Vancouver, ending a 23-year championship drought. Joe also appeared in Calgary's 1968 and 1970 Grey Cup teams before finally reaching the winning side in 1971. His brothers John and Tom also played for the Stampeders, creating a rare three-brother connection that became part of the franchise's identity. The reverse is a Canadian O-Pee-Chee bilingual text back with an English biography and a French translation, not a puzzle back. It carries card number 61, his physical details, Utah State background and a cartoon recalling his arrival at Calgary's training camp after time with the Philadelphia Eagles. This is not treated as a rookie card because Forzani appeared in earlier O-Pee-Chee CFL issues. The card shows attractive original colour and an apparently uncreased front, with moderate corner touches, slight rounding at the upper right and lower left, and small areas of roughness or chipping along the white perimeter. A few tiny print or surface specks are visible in the image area, but no clear writing, paper tear, pinhole, heavy stain or major wrinkle appears in the scan. Centering is reasonably balanced, with a slight vertical and side-to-side shift. The reverse displays typical cream age toning, minor edge rub and touched corners while the blue and green printing remains strong. The protective sleeve can conceal very fine scratches or shallow wrinkles, which is reflected in the cautious assessment. EX 5 is a conservative raw estimate because the card has solid eye appeal and no obvious crease, but the corner wear, border roughness, light speckling and toning prevent an Excellent-Mint call. This appealing championship-era single is well suited to a Calgary team run, a Forzani family collection or completion of the 1972 O-Pee-Chee CFL set. Grade Estimate: EX 5
