Description

1972 O-Pee-Chee CFL Frank Andruski #59 Three-Time All-Canadian Calgary Stampeders The lone red jersey on this sheet is its own sales pitch. The 1972 O-Pee-Chee CFL Frank Andruski #59 gives Calgary collectors one of the best defensive backs of the franchise's golden stretch, and it breaks up the wall of green Riders in a way that makes this nine-card sheet display-ready. Andruski belongs to the Stampeders block of O-Pee-Chee's 132-card CFL set, the final CFL issue of that O-Pee-Chee era, sold in ten-cent wax packs of eight cards with bubble gum, famous now for the Joe Theismann rookie at 27 but treasured by Alberta collectors for the red-and-white sequence in the sixties. Andruski's credentials are stated right on the card. Frank was selected to the Western Conference and All-Canadian All-Star teams in 1967, 1968, and 1969, three straight seasons of dominance that made him a household name in Calgary, with the cartoon panel stamping him an all-star in those same years. Listed at 6-foot-2, 195 pounds, an import out of Utah, he was the lockdown defensive halfback who anchored the defense that guided the Stampeders to the 1971 Grey Cup championship, Calgary's first title since 1948, the ending of one of professional sport's longest droughts and the single best story any card in this nine-slot sheet can tell. That championship core is why this card keeps appearing in Stampeders history threads, and why pairing it with the Riders cards around it reconstructs the exact Western Conference battleground of the early 1970s. the front carries a diagonal crease line folding into the upper left corner and grazing the S in the STAMPEDERS banner, the most visible flaw on this half of the sheet, while the photo itself stays bright with a small stray green ink dot low on the red jersey, an original print artifact. Edges are mostly firm, the bottom right corner is softly dinged, and the yellow name print on the orange jersey is a low-contrast design choice rather than fading. The back shows tan freckling through the lower field, especially beneath the green panel, with crisp blue framing. This is the standard Canadian O-Pee-Chee bilingual back, not a puzzle back. We grade VG-EX 3 because of the corner crease, and price it accordingly. Grade Estimate: VG-EX 3
