Description

1972-73 O-Pee-Chee Walt Tkaczuk #14 Player Crest Insert New York Rangers Hockey Card Add a striking piece of Rangers history to a vintage collection with this 1972-73 O-Pee-Chee Walt Tkaczuk #14 Player Crest Insert New York Rangers Hockey Card. It is No. 14 of 22 in the O-Pee-Chee Player Crests set, with Tkaczuk’s portrait framed inside the black, red and white shield design. The backing identifies him as a New York centre and carries English and French instructions for pushing out and applying the crest. Unlike a conventional player card, this insert was designed as a displayable sticker-style collectible, giving it a distinctive shape and a strong visual presence in a Rangers or 1970s hockey collection. Tkaczuk became one of the most reliable centres in Rangers history, playing his entire NHL career in New York. Born in Germany, he moved with his family to Canada as a young child and became the first Germany-born player to appear in an NHL game. In 1969-70, he led the Rangers with 77 points and 50 assists, earned team MVP honours and was selected for the NHL All-Star Game. He later centered the Rangers’ Bulldog Line, providing responsible two-way play behind the celebrated G-A-G Line of Vic Hadfield, Jean Ratelle and Rod Gilbert. New York reached the 1972 Stanley Cup Final and returned to the Final in 1979. The crest captures Tkaczuk during the early years of that long Rangers career, before his reputation as a steady, versatile centre was fully established. The paper backing has lightly worn, softened corners, with the most noticeable whitening and edge wear at the lower-left corner and along the bottom edge. A small dark handling mark is visible near the upper-right area, and minor pale scuffs appear around the crest’s upper points and right contour. The printed shield is approximately centered from left to right and appears a little high within the backing. The portrait remains intact, and no definite crease crosses the image, though a faint line near the lower backing and the sleeve make a full surface assessment difficult. The reverse shown is plain tan stock with a faint shield outline, not a Canadian O-Pee-Chee bilingual player biography back and not a puzzle back. It is the push-out Player Crest insert, so the bilingual instructions on the front should not be mistaken for a bilingual card back. This collectible connects a distinctive Rangers player to the colorful insert culture of vintage Canadian hockey cards. The name, centre position and New York identification are clear, and the large shield portrait is easy to feature in a team display. The visible corner and edge wear is consistent with an older handled insert, so the listing should make its condition clear rather than imply a mint example. A conservative raw grade around VG-EX 4 is appropriate from the scans, with the lower-edge wear and small marks weighing against a higher estimate. It is a memorable option for Rangers fans, Tkaczuk collectors and builders of the 22-piece Player Crests set. Grade Estimate: VG-EX 4
