Garry Monahan was selected first overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the inaugural 1963 NHL Amateur Draft, making him the original first overall pick, a distinction that carries huge historical weight for hockey collectors. Born in Barrie Ontario in 1946, Monahan played for Montreal, Detroit, Los Angeles, Toronto, and Vancouver over a 12 season NHL career, carving out a role as a versatile center who could check, kill penalties, and contribute secondary scoring. He was a junior star with the Peterborough Petes and represented the new era of drafted talent entering the NHL. By 1972-73 he was with Toronto, providing depth down the middle and veteran presence. This O-Pee-Chee card shows him in the purple Leafs jersey variation with a warm smile, long 1970s hair, and the orange Toronto background, with the classic yellow name bar and blue logo. The 1972-73 set is cherished for its bold colors and large portraits. This is the Canadian O-Pee-Chee version with the bilingual English and French back and cartoon illustration noting he plays all three forward positions, not a puzzle back, printed in Canada with full career stats. Front shows corners with light softening, the top right corner is slightly rounded, edges have minor chipping typical of beige borders, gloss remains, centering is roughly 60/40 left to right and 55/45 top to bottom, no creases or surface breaks visible. The back has even age toning, clear print, no marks, slight wear on bottom edge, no wrinkles, which supports a conservative EX 5 grade based on corner wear and centering rather than damage. The 1972-73 O-Pee-Chee Garry Monahan #207 Toronto Maple Leafs is essential for draft history collectors, first overall pick chasers, and Toronto Maple Leafs team set builders looking for a unique story.
