The 1972-73 O-Pee-Chee Buffalo Sabres #4 Team Logo Insert NHL captures the charging buffalo and crossed sabres design just as one of hockey’s most exciting young franchises was becoming a contender. A short horizontal wrinkle or crease appears to enter from the left outer edge near mid-height, and scattered surface or print loss is visible in the blue, particularly around the lower buffalo head and along portions of the circular design. 1972-73 O-Pee-Chee Buffalo Sabres #4 Team Logo Insert NHL
The 1972-73 O-Pee-Chee Buffalo Sabres #4 Team Logo Insert NHL captures the charging buffalo and crossed sabres design just as one of hockey’s most exciting young franchises was becoming a contender. The blue, white, and gold circular emblem has tremendous vintage presence, and the push-out remains seated in its original card surround rather than removed or applied. That intact state makes the card especially useful for a period-correct Sabres display or an O-Pee-Chee Team Logos set. These logo inserts appeared in third-series wax packs during 1972-73, with the 30-card checklist spanning established NHL clubs, recent expansion teams, and the new WHA. The card itself carries no printed number, but #4 is the accepted checklist reference. Buffalo joined the NHL in 1970 and won the opportunity to select Gilbert Perreault first overall in the expansion club’s inaugural draft. Perreault soon united with Rick Martin and René Robert to form the French Connection, one of the era’s most electrifying forward lines. During the 1972-73 season represented by this insert, the Sabres reached the playoffs for the first time, strengthening a fan culture that would become one of the league’s most devoted. The franchise advanced to its first Stanley Cup Final in 1975, and the original charging-buffalo crest remains tied to that formative, high-scoring era. Canadian manufacturer O-Pee-Chee gave this insert a die-cut circular logo and a plain brown adhesive-style reverse, visible in the supplied back image. It is not a Canadian O-Pee-Chee bilingual statistical back and it is not a puzzle back. The front retains rich blue and gold colour, but the cream field has a faint handwritten pencil number 5 near the upper-left area. A short horizontal wrinkle or crease appears to enter from the left outer edge near mid-height, and scattered surface or print loss is visible in the blue, particularly around the lower buffalo head and along portions of the circular design. The four outer corners have light to moderate softening, and the edges show small amounts of roughness without extensive paper loss. The die-cut circle remains intact, although its channel is conspicuous and includes the expected holding tabs. Centering is somewhat top-heavy, with more cream space below the circular logo than above, while side-to-side alignment is reasonably balanced. The brown back looks generally clean and shows no large stain, but grading is limited by the sleeve and scan angle. The pencil notation, possible left-edge wrinkle, surface chips, and centering lead to a conservative VG-EX 4 estimate. Despite those honest signs of age, the card has attractive colour, complete imagery, and strong nostalgic appeal. It is an affordable way to own an early Sabres collectible connected to Perreault, the French Connection, and the franchise’s first playoff season.
