1972-73 O-Pee-Chee Arnie Brown #144 Bilingual Back New York Islanders
$6.00
The 1972-73 season handed the NHL two brand new franchises and one very confused printing plate, and this card is the most famous result of that collision. the front presents with a clean pink background, strong registration on the black team lettering and no visible creasing in the image area, with a light touch of wear on the top left corner, a faint tan border nick along the bottom edge and centering that runs roughly 55/45 left to right with a slightly wider bottom margin. Raw Grade Estimate: EX 5.
1972-73 O-Pee-Chee Arnie Brown #144 Bilingual Back New York Islanders
The 1972-73 season handed the NHL two brand new franchises and one very confused printing plate, and this card is the most famous result of that collision. Arnie Brown stands in the first-year New York Islanders white sweater with the original NY crest, yet turn the card over and the orange header still reads Detroit Red Wings, because O-Pee-Chee had already gone to press before the veteran defenseman was moved to Long Island on October 4, 1972. That mismatch is not damage and it is not a fake, it is a snapshot of a trade happening faster than a printing press, and it is exactly the kind of detail that keeps set builders coming back to the 1972-73 O-Pee-Chee Arnie Brown #144 card. The issue itself was the largest hockey set O-Pee-Chee had ever produced at 340 cards, split into series and printed in Canada, and the second series is where this card sits with its distinctive tan border, vertical team name and yellow name stripe. Brown was a genuinely good story before he ever reached Long Island, a rushing defenseman who broke in with Toronto in 1961-62, spent seven seasons with the New York Rangers and finished 1969-70 with 36 points and a plus-24 rating, then landed in Detroit before the expansion draft scattered veterans across the league. He played 48 games for an Islanders club that went 12-60-6 in its debut year, the worst record in the league, then was sent to Atlanta in February 1973 and closed out with a season in the WHA. His 681 NHL games, 44 goals and 141 assists are the resume, but the card is the conversation piece, and it belongs in an original Islanders team set, a 1970s O-Pee-Chee binder or any collection built around expansion era oddities. the front presents with a clean pink background, strong registration on the black team lettering and no visible creasing in the image area, with a light touch of wear on the top left corner, a faint tan border nick along the bottom edge and centering that runs roughly 55/45 left to right with a slightly wider bottom margin. The reverse is bright and fully legible with the bilingual English and French biography intact and no writing, tape or paper loss, and this is a standard O-Pee-Chee bilingual back, not a puzzle back. Grading conservatively, EX 5 is the honest call, because the corner and edge touches are real but minor, the print quality is strong for the era and the card has never been trimmed, cleaned or re-colored, and a stricter grader could reasonably argue a six on the strength of the surface.
