1971 O-Pee-Chee Wayne Simpson #339 Cincinnati Reds Capture the excitement of one of Cincinnati’s most electrifying young arms with the 1971 O-Pee-Chee Wayne Simpson #339 Cincinnati Reds. The card features Simpson following through in a crisp pitching pose, framed by the dramatic black border, oversized orange REDS lettering and bright green player name that made the 1971 issue an instant vintage classic. His flowing signature across the lower image is a printed facsimile from the original design, not a hand signed autograph. This card was made for Canadian collectors and has the yellow and black reverse associated with the 1971 O-Pee-Chee baseball release. English and French text appears on the back along with the Printed in Canada line, so this is explicitly a Canadian O-Pee-Chee bilingual back and not a puzzle back. O-Pee-Chee cards from this era were issued in smaller quantities than their American Topps counterparts, and their black borders are famously unforgiving because even minor handling leaves visible white wear. Wayne Simpson’s story is inseparable from the 1970 pennant winning Reds. As a 21 year old rookie, the powerful right hander raced to a spectacular 13 and 1 start and earned selection to the National League All-Star team. A shoulder injury interrupted that dream season, but Simpson still finished 14 and 3 with a 3.02 earned run average, exactly the breakout performance summarized by the statistics on this card. He helped give Cincinnati the early momentum that carried the club to the National League pennant and the World Series, making this single a compelling snapshot of the team just before the Big Red Machine reached its full championship form. Simpson later pitched for Kansas City, Philadelphia and California, but his remarkable Cincinnati debut remains the defining chapter of his career and a favourite what-if story among baseball historians. The reverse combines his 1970 record with bilingual biographical copy, a black and white headshot and classic period typography. The front retains strong colour and a clean central image, while small white chips are visible at the upper left corner, across portions of the top edge, intermittently down the side borders and in a few spots along the lower black edge; the upper right and lower corners show light softening rather than heavy rounding. Centering appears notably solid for the issue, with the frame only slightly uneven from side to side and top to bottom. Fine specks are visible in the black field and on the image, but the card is photographed through a protective sleeve, so loose dust and plastic scuffs cannot be separated confidently from actual surface marks. The yellow reverse shows expected age toning, light edge wear and modest corner rub without visible writing, wax staining or paper loss. No clear crease, wrinkle or serious bend is evident in the supplied front and back photographs. A conservative EX 5 estimate reflects the balanced centering and appealing image while allowing for black border chipping, corner wear and the inability to inspect gloss outside the sleeve. For Reds collectors, this card delivers scarcity, visual impact and the story of a rookie season that briefly took the National League by storm. Grade Estimate: EX 5
