Few rookie cards can boast a two-sport legend in the lower panel, and this 1971 O-Pee-Chee #391 delivers exactly that by pairing outfielder Steve Brye with Cotton Nash, the three-time All-American basketball star at Kentucky who became one of only thirteen men to appear in both the NBA and Major League Baseball. this is the most worn card on the sheet, showing chipping along the top black border with several small white breaks, frayed corners at top left and bottom right, light surface wear within the frame and centering that drifts noticeably to the left, though the yellow panels stay vivid and the facsimile signatures remain bold. Raw Grade Estimate: VG-EX 4.
1971 O-Pee-Chee Steve Brye Cotton Nash #391 Rookie Stars RC Minnesota Twins
Few rookie cards can boast a two-sport legend in the lower panel, and this 1971 O-Pee-Chee #391 delivers exactly that by pairing outfielder Steve Brye with Cotton Nash, the three-time All-American basketball star at Kentucky who became one of only thirteen men to appear in both the NBA and Major League Baseball. Nash starred for Adolph Rupp's Wildcats, scored 1,770 career points, was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers and played professional basketball for the Lakers, the San Francisco Warriors and the ABA Kentucky Colonels while also logging major league time with the Chicago White Sox and Minnesota Twins, a dual-career story that makes this cardboard one of the great crossover collectibles in the hobby. Brye, the upper-panel outfielder, broke in with the 1970 Twins and carved out a lengthy major league career, giving the card lasting team-set value as well. The O-Pee-Chee Canadian printing adds bilingual French and English reverse text in the signature yellow and black palette, and the smaller OPC production run makes these rookie stars cards meaningfully scarcer than their Topps twins. this is the most worn card on the sheet, showing chipping along the top black border with several small white breaks, frayed corners at top left and bottom right, light surface wear within the frame and centering that drifts noticeably to the left, though the yellow panels stay vivid and the facsimile signatures remain bold. The reverse is surprisingly clean with no staining, no creases and no wrinkles, which rescues the card from the Very Good tier despite its border troubles. Balancing the heavy border chipping against clean surfaces and strong color, a conservative raw grade of VG-EX 4 is the honest assessment. Collectors pursuing the 1971 O-Pee-Chee Steve Brye Cotton Nash #391 Rookie Stars card for basketball crossover sets, Twins collections or OPC rookie runs will value both the story and the straightforward grading.
