1971 O-Pee-Chee Pat Corrales #293 Cincinnati Reds
Celebrate a baseball lifer and a major managerial trailblazer with the 1971 O-Pee-Chee Pat Corrales #293 Cincinnati Reds. Corrales is pictured in full catcher’s gear, creating one of the sheet’s most visually distinctive action portraits, framed by the deep black border, orange REDS lettering and bright green name used throughout the classic 1971 set. The sweeping signature across the lower image is a printed facsimile included in the original design and is not a hand signed autograph. This is the Canadian O-Pee-Chee edition, a more limited counterpart to the American Topps issue. Its reverse uses yellow and black ink, carries the Printed in Canada statement and presents the biography and debut text in English and French. It is therefore a Canadian O-Pee-Chee bilingual back, not a puzzle back. The black borders are famous for displaying even tiny touches, while O-Pee-Chee production from this period often produced rougher edges than the American release, giving well-preserved copies special appeal. Pat Corrales spent nine major league seasons as a catcher, including time with Philadelphia, St. Louis, Cincinnati and San Diego. With the Reds he backed up Hall of Famer Johnny Bench and appeared in the 1970 World Series, linking this card directly to Cincinnati’s first National League pennant of the Big Red Machine era. His greatest historical importance came after his playing days. Corrales became the first Mexican-American manager in Major League Baseball when he took charge of the Texas Rangers, and he later managed the Philadelphia Phillies and Cleveland Indians. He also built a long, respected coaching career, serving with the Atlanta Braves through their remarkable run of division titles and their 1995 World Series championship. That legacy gives the card crossover interest among collectors focused on Latino baseball history, managers, coaches and championship organizations. The bilingual reverse adds a black and white portrait, 1970 and lifetime statistics and concise career information. The front presents with strong colour and a relatively clean image, while the black frame shows small white chips along the top edge, light rubbing down both vertical sides and scattered wear on the lower border; the upper right and lower left corners show the clearest softening, with the remaining corners exhibiting lighter touches. Centering appears close to even, with only a mild left to right variance and a stable top to bottom frame. A few pale dots and short marks are visible on the border and photo, but the card remains inside a plastic page, making sleeve debris and card surface wear difficult to separate. The reverse shows normal age toning, mild corner rub and light edge wear without visible writing, paper loss or heavy staining. No obvious crease, wrinkle or bend is confirmed in the supplied photographs. A conservative EX 5 estimate reflects the attractive centering, bright picture and apparently sound body, while allowing for black border chipping, corner wear and unseen surface limitations. This is a compelling Canadian single with visual presence and an important story that extends across more than five decades of professional baseball.
