1971 O-Pee-Chee Luis Tiant #95 Minnesota Twins
Before the Fu Manchu moustache, the twisting windup and the roar of Fenway Park made him a Boston folk hero, Luis Tiant spent one fascinating season in Minnesota, and this 1971 O-Pee-Chee Luis Tiant #95 Minnesota Twins card is the Canadian record of that brief chapter. The photograph shows El Tiante in a fielding ready pose in Twins colours, glove up and eyes fixed on the camera, framed by the dramatic black border and orange Twins lettering that define the 1971 set. Because Tiant is so strongly associated with Cleveland and Boston, his lone Twins issue has always carried extra curiosity value for player collectors assembling a complete career run. Add the scarcer Canadian O-Pee-Chee printing and this becomes one of the most appealing singles in any group of 1971 Twins cards. The son of a celebrated Negro Leagues pitcher, Luis Tiant built one of the most compelling careers of the expansion era. The back of this card recalls his magnificent 1968 campaign with Cleveland, when he won 21 games and struck out 19 Minnesota batters in a ten inning game on July 3 of that year to establish an American League record. The reverse also notes that he won his first six decisions of 1970 before an injury interrupted his season, finishing 7 and 3 for the Twins. Released by Minnesota during the spring of 1971, he famously resurrected his career in Boston, winning the 1972 American League earned run average title, posting three twenty win seasons for the Red Sox and defeating Cincinnati twice in the unforgettable 1975 World Series. He retired with 229 victories, three All Star selections and two earned run average titles, and his death in October 2024 brought a fresh wave of appreciation for a pitcher many supporters still believe belongs in Cooperstown. The Canadian identity of this single is unmistakable on the golden bilingual reverse, where French narrative text runs through the dark side panel, the pitching record is headed in French and English, and the printed in Canada T. C. G. credit confirms its O-Pee-Chee origin. The back portrait in the starburst frame accompanies his complete record through 1970, including a superb lifetime earned run average of 2.88 at that stage of his career. Black bordered 1971 cards are among the most condition sensitive mainstream issues ever made because every edge touch shows white against the dark stock, and Canadian examples circulated in much smaller numbers than the American Topps printing. The front displays small white chips along the left edge at mid height and again toward the lower left, scattered speckling on the top edge, a touched top left corner and light wear at the remaining corners. A diagonal corner crease or bend is visible in the black border at the bottom left corner below the photograph, which is the single most important condition factor on this card and the main reason for a conservative assessment. The central image remains bright with strong sky blue and clean uniform colour, no heavy surface scratching crosses Tiant's face or body, and the bilingual back appears clean and fully legible with no writing observed in the scan. Centering of the photograph is attractive and close to even from side to side with a very slight emphasis of black border on the right. Even at a very good level, an honest Canadian printing of a beloved borderline Hall of Fame pitcher in a one year uniform remains an easy card to justify in a player collection, a Twins team set or a 1971 O-Pee-Chee binder.
