1971 O-Pee-Chee Jim Holt #7 Rookie Card Minnesota Twins

$2.00

Low number cards from vintage sets always draw a second glance, and this 1971 O-Pee-Chee Jim Holt #7 Rookie Card Minnesota Twins single pairs that number seven slot with the rookie card status of a player who later became a World Series champion. Early numbers in any vintage set tend to suffer extra wear from rubber bands and the top of sorted stacks, and the fragile black borders of 1971 magnify that history dramatically. Raw Grade Estimate: FR 1.5.

1971 O-Pee-Chee Jim Holt #7 Rookie Card Minnesota Twins Low number cards from vintage sets always draw a second glance, and this 1971 O-Pee-Chee Jim Holt #7 Rookie Card Minnesota Twins single pairs that number seven slot with the rookie card status of a player who later became a World Series champion. Holt is photographed in a warm follow through pose, bat on his shoulder and a broad smile beneath his Twins cap, with his facsimile signature sweeping across his uniform. The card comes from the very first series of the Canadian set, the section that also contains the famous Bert Blyleven rookie, which makes it a natural target for set builders working through the opening pages of a 1971 binder. This particular copy is offered honestly as a well worn budget example, ideal for completing a set without paying for condition that a binder collection does not require. Jim Holt's path to the majors included service in the United States Army during the Vietnam era before he established himself as a versatile outfielder and first baseman with Minnesota. The back of this card reports that he was the number two hitter in the American Association in 1969 and led the leagues outfielders defensively with an amazing 27 assists, then batted .333 in the Venezuelan League that winter to rank fourth in that circuit. His printed 1970 major league statistics show a .266 average across 142 games for the division champion Twins, valuable production from a player used all over the outfield and off the bench. Holt later joined the Oakland Athletics and was part of the 1974 World Series championship club, earning a ring with one of the great dynasties of the decade. He remained a respected figure in his North Carolina community after baseball and passed away in 2019, remembered as a dependable professional from a memorable era of Twins and Athletics history. As a Canadian issue, the card features the bilingual O-Pee-Chee reverse with French narrative text in the dark side panel, French and English statistical headings and the printed in Canada T. C. G. credit on the golden stock. The reverse also confirms his first year in professional baseball as 1965 and his first game in the majors as 1968, with this 1971 O-Pee-Chee card recognised by collectors as his rookie card in a mainstream set. Early numbers in any vintage set tend to suffer extra wear from rubber bands and the top of sorted stacks, and the fragile black borders of 1971 magnify that history dramatically. Canadian print quantities were also far lower than Topps production, so even filler grade O-Pee-Chee rookies serve a real purpose in the market. This is a heavily worn example and should be purchased as a filler, with pronounced white chipping and wear running down the left black edge from top to bottom, heavy touches and rounding at the corners and a diagonal crease through the top right corner area. The surface of the photograph shows extensive scuffing and a faded, washed appearance across the pale background and uniform, with multiple fine scratches and wrinkles visible over the image, including marks to the left of the cap and across the upper black border. The bottom edge shows strong white wear in the scan, while the bilingual back remains complete and readable, which at least preserves the statistical and biographical value of the card. Centering is difficult to judge precisely because the left edge wear intrudes on the border, but the photograph itself sits acceptably within the frame without a severe miscut. That combination of creasing, surface wear and edge loss places the card conservatively in fair territory, and it is priced accordingly as an affordable way to fill the number seven rookie slot in a Canadian 1971 set. Grade Estimate: FR 1.5
