1971 O-Pee-Chee Frank Quilici #141 Minnesota Twins
Utility infielders are the glue of championship clubs, and this 1971 O-Pee-Chee Frank Quilici #141 Minnesota Twins card honours a man who served the Twins as a player, a World Series record holder, a manager and a beloved ambassador for the franchise. Quilici is shown gripping his bat during practice, with teammates and equipment visible behind him in one of the candid spring style photographs that give the 1971 set so much of its charm. The red Twins masthead, black border and flowing facsimile signature frame the image handsomely. Because the 1970 season was the last of his playing career, this Canadian issue also functions as a final tribute card from his days on the field, a detail that Twins historians and team set collectors will appreciate. Frank Quilici reached the majors with Minnesota in 1965 and immediately wrote his name into World Series history. In Game 1 of the 1965 World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the rookie collected two hits in a single inning during the Twins big third inning rally, tying a World Series record in his very first Fall Classic game. The biography on the back of this card describes him as one of the most versatile performers in baseball, a natural shortstop who developed into a slick fielding second baseman and third baseman, and it notes that he led Southern League second basemen with 101 double plays in 1964. He appeared in 111 games for the division champion 1970 Twins, providing trusted depth behind Rod Carew and Harmon Killebrew era regulars. After retiring as a player he became manager of the Twins in 1972 at only thirty three years of age, guided the club through the 1975 season, and later remained closely involved with the organisation through broadcasting and the Minnesota Twins Community Fund until his death in 2018. The reverse confirms this as the Canadian O-Pee-Chee printing, with French text filling the dark side panel, bilingual major league batting record headings and the printed in Canada T. C. G. credit on the golden back. The starburst portrait and full statistics through his final 1970 season make the back a compact career summary for player collectors. Canadian O-Pee-Chee cards were distributed in considerably smaller numbers than American Topps cards, so even familiar names become worthwhile pickups when working on the true Canadian set. The black borders of 1971 reveal every year of handling, and most surviving raw copies in circulation show exactly the sort of honest wear seen here. The front shows moderate wear across the black borders, including speckled chipping along the left and bottom edges and softness at each corner. The top right corner is the weakest point, displaying noticeable rounding with light creasing or veining in the black stock at the corner, while the other corners are touched but remain complete. The photograph itself has good colour in the grass and pinstripes, with only light surface speckling visible in the dark upper area and no heavy crease crossing the image. The bilingual back is clean and fully legible with no writing, marks or paper loss observed in the scan. Centering is acceptable for the issue, close to even from left to right with the black border reading slightly heavier along the bottom edge. Given the corner condition and border chipping, a conservative very good assessment is appropriate, and at that level this final playing era card of a genuine Twins lifer is an affordable and meaningful set filler.
