1971 O-Pee-Chee Don Trull #51 Edmonton Eskimos Quarterback collectors will love this 1971 O-Pee-Chee Don Trull #51 Edmonton Eskimos card, featuring one of the most interesting American imports to ever lead the Eskimos offense. The 1971 O-Pee-Chee CFL set is iconic for its simple but powerful design, with red borders, large team logos, and bilingual backs that capture a truly Canadian collecting experience. The set was printed in Canada by O-Pee-Chee and distributed in an era when the CFL was at its competitive peak, with NFL veterans crossing the border to become stars up north. Don Trull is a perfect example of that crossover appeal. A 6 foot 2, 205 pound quarterback from Baylor University, Trull was drafted 1st by the Oilers in 1963 and spent six years as a veteran of the NFL before coming to Canada. His cartoon fact on the back proudly states Don was drafted 1st by the Oilers in 1963. In 1970 he led the Eskies on a remarkable seven straight wins to finish second place and make the playoffs, revitalizing the Edmonton attack with his veteran leadership and strong arm. For Baylor Bears fans and AFL historians, Trull remains a legend as one of the early great passing quarterbacks under coach Sam Boyd, and his time in Houston with the Oilers made him a household name in Texas football lore before his Canadian chapter. This card shows Trull in his number 9 Eskimos uniform, kneeling on the Clarke Stadium grass, a classic pose from this set. It is ideal for quarterback collections, Oilers and Baylor alumni, and Edmonton team set builders. This is a Canadian O-Pee-Chee bilingual back with English and French text, O-Pee-Chee logo and Printed in Canada at the bottom, and the cartoon trivia bubble about his draft status. The front centering is approximately 65/35 left to right, slightly favoring the left, with top to bottom about 60/40, typical for this sheet cut. Corners show light rounding at the top left and bottom left, with the right side corners remaining sharper. The red border has minimal white chipping but does show a tiny touch of wear at the top edge. The back is tan stock with slightly darker toning than some others in the sheet, with no creases, no writing, and clean print. There is a very faint print spot near the bottom text that is factory original. We conservatively grade this as VG-EX 4 to EX 5 range due to centering and corner softness, but it displays very nicely as a vintage quarterback card. The 1971 O-Pee-Chee Don Trull #51 Edmonton Eskimos offers great history and eye appeal at an affordable price. Grade Estimate: VG-EX 4
