Own a piece of Canadian baseball history with this 1971 O-Pee-Chee Alex Johnson/Carl Yastrzemski/Tony Oliva #61 league leaders card. Card History and Player Achievements
The 1971 O-Pee-Chee set is legendary among collectors for its notoriously difficult black borders and lower production run compared to its Topps counterpart. This specific card celebrates:
- Alex Johnson: The 1970 AL Batting Champion with a .3289 average.
- Carl Yastrzemski: The Triple Crown winner and 18-time All-Star who hit .3286 that year.
- Tony Oliva: A three-time batting champion and Hall of Famer who finished close behind at .325.
Condition Report
This vintage specimen is a classic example of the "tough" 1971 OPC production.
- Corners: All four corners show visible white wear and rounding, common for the sensitive black-border stock.
- Edges: There is noticeable chipping and silvering along the top and right edges of the front.
- Centering: The card is centered slightly toward the top and right on the front.
- Back: Features the characteristic O-Pee-Chee bilingual back with French and English text ("Meneurs chez les Frappeurs"). The tan card stock remains bright with a clean surface free of major staining.
Grade and Value
Based on the high-resolution photos, this card is estimated at a raw VG-EX 4. While it shows the typical edge wear of the 1971 series, it remains a vibrant, crease-free addition to any Red Sox or Hall of Fame collection.
Grade Estimate
VG-EX 4 (Very Good to Excellent)
- Reasoning: Moderate corner rounding and edge chipping on the front black borders, but no visible creases and a very clean back.
