Description

1970 O-Pee-Chee Joe Forzani #97 Forzani Group Sport Chek Co-Owner Calgary Stampeders VG-EX 4 Behind this clean-cut portrait of Joe Forzani in the red home jersey of the Calgary Stampeders lies one of the most remarkable second acts in Canadian business history, and this 1970 O-Pee-Chee Joe Forzani #97 preserves the linebacker years of the man whose family name would come to dominate Canadian sporting goods retail. Forzani grips a football at his hip and offers a slight smile, number 73 bold across his chest, with the riding horse logo and white name plate identifying him as a defensive end and linebacker. Collectors searching for a 1970 O-Pee-Chee Joe Forzani #97 are buying both a Grey Cup champion's card and the earliest cardboard footnote to a retail empire. O-Pee-Chee of London, Ontario produced the 1970 CFL series with black backs, lime green cartoon panels and bilingual English and French text, and this card carries a Canadian O-Pee-Chee bilingual back, not a puzzle back. The cartoon notes that this is Joe's third year as a professional, placing him in the experienced core of a Calgary club that had already tasted Grey Cup glory in 1968 and was approaching the 1971 championship season. After his playing days, the Forzani family opened Forzani's Locker Room on Calgary's 17th Avenue in 1974 with Joe among the original investor group alongside his brothers and teammate Basil Bark, and that single store grew into the Forzani Group behind Sport Chek, Sports Experts and Athletes World, ultimately acquired by Canadian Tire in an approximately eight-hundred-million-dollar deal in 2011. On the field Forzani brought Utah State toughness to a Calgary defense that matured into the best unit in the Canadian Football League, and his name appears on the roster of the 1971 Stampeders team that defeated Toronto 14-11 in the 59th Grey Cup, the franchise's first championship in 23 years. The bio on this card praises his size and plenty of speed, attributes that made him a reliable rotational presence along the front and on linebacker depth, and teammates remembered the Forzani brothers as among the most popular figures in the locker room. For collectors the card is a conversation piece, linking vintage CFL football to the storefronts millions of Canadians visit every year. the front shows strong gloss and rich color with only light corner blunting at the bottom left tip and clean, bright white borders, while centering sits at approximately 55/45 left to right with balanced vertical margins. The reverse presents moderate edge chipping along the top and bottom borders with intact corners and light scuffing across the black background that is typical for the issue, and the green cartoon panel remains bright with no fading. No creases, wrinkles, writing or stains are visible in either scan, and the card retains firm structural integrity. The conservative estimate below balances the border chipping against the excellent front presentation and the card's unusually strong story-driven demand. Grade Estimate: VG-EX 4
