Description

1970 O-Pee-Chee Gary Robinson #33 Rookie RC BC Lions VG-EX 4 Alex Collect is thrilled to present this original 1970 O-Pee-Chee Gary Robinson #33 Rookie RC BC Lions VG-EX 4 vintage football card, an essential rookie issue for Canadian sports card collectors and football historians alike. Issued in 1970 by O-Pee-Chee in Ontario, this card marks the official trading card debut of defensive end Gary Robinson, capturing him in his second professional season after a standout collegiate career at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia. Drafted in the second round (tenth overall) by the BC Lions in the 1969 CFL Draft, Robinson quickly made an enormous impact on the defensive front with his rare combination of 6-foot-4, 250-pound size, brute strength, and explosive closing speed. Robinson spent a full decade as a cornerstone anchor of the Lions' defensive line from 1969 through 1978, battling against top offensive tackles across Western Canada and helping establish the Lions as one of the most formidable defensive units in the Pacific Northwest during the 1970s. His career reflects the classic era of rugged Canadian football, where homegrown Canadian university athletes proved themselves against elite international talent and became beloved household names among Vancouver sports supporters. During this golden age of Canadian football, defensive linemen were celebrated for their toughness and durability, and Robinson embodied those qualities on every single snap at Empire Stadium. As the definitive rookie card of a ten-year CFL stalwart who dedicated the prime of his athletic career to British Columbia football, this piece holds enduring significance in any complete Canadian sports card collection or vintage gridiron gallery. This card features an authentic Canadian O-Pee-Chee bilingual back printed in Canada with English and French biographical text and cartoons, rather than a puzzle back. Centering on the front is well-balanced at approximately 48/52 left-to-right and 50/50 top-to-bottom, framing Robinson's portrait sharply within the classic 1970 white borders. The corners exhibit moderate vintage softening and blunting at the tips with noticeable white paper showing, consistent with a VG-EX 4 grade. The perimeter edges display light characteristic O-Pee-Chee rough-cut texture with minor edge chipping along the border margins. The surface maintains strong gloss with good colour saturation on jersey 67 and the open sky, free of major creases or paper loss. The bilingual reverse features legible typography, bold cartoon imagery detailing his second year as a pro, and clean cardstock margins with no moisture spots or stray marks, representing an attractive, accessible vintage rookie card for discerning collectors. Grade Estimate: VG-EX 4
