1970 O-Pee-Chee Dick Thornton #8 Toronto Argonauts GOOD 2

Description

1970 O-Pee-Chee Dick Thornton #8 Toronto Argonauts GOOD 2 The 1970 O-Pee-Chee Dick Thornton #8 Toronto Argonauts GOOD 2 card features one of the most versatile and memorable Canadian Football League players of his generation. Thornton is shown wearing number 25 in the Argonauts’ dark uniform, holding a football beside the sideline with the classic Toronto boat logo prominently displayed below. His intense expression, broad shoulder pads, and unmistakable early 1970s styling create a portrait with substantial character. Offered in well-loved condition, this original card is an affordable way to add a notable Toronto player and authentic Canadian O-Pee-Chee issue to a vintage football collection. The card comes from O-Pee-Chee’s 115-card 1970 CFL release, whose design was closely related to the second series of 1969 Topps football. The Canadian edition distinguished itself through CFL photography and bilingual card backs. Thornton’s reverse contains English and French biographical text together with a green cartoon panel. It is a Canadian O-Pee-Chee bilingual back and not a puzzle back. Nicknamed Tricky Dick, Thornton played numerous roles during a lengthy professional career, contributing as a defensive back, quarterback, receiver, punter, and return specialist. He competed for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Toronto Argonauts and became particularly associated with Toronto’s strong teams around the beginning of the 1970s. Thornton was a CFL All-Star and later received one of Canadian football’s highest honours through induction into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame. His versatility reflected the resourcefulness demanded of players in the CFL, where the wider field, twelve-player formations, unlimited backfield motion, and three-down game create unusual strategic possibilities. The card’s biography emphasizes his defensive abilities and notes his American college background at Northwestern. For Argonauts collectors, this portrait connects a celebrated player with the long history of one of North America’s oldest professional sports franchises. This card has a confirmed crease and extensive visible circulation wear. The corners are heavily rounded and frayed, with the lower corners showing pronounced softness and surface loss. Cream border areas have substantial age toning, scuffing, embedded marks, and edge chipping. The front surface shows scratches and handling wear, including visible lines across the dark uniform and background, though Thornton’s portrait, number, team name, position, and Argonauts logo remain identifiable and substantially complete. Centering is imperfect, with uneven border dimensions and a slightly irregular vintage cut. The black reverse exhibits heavy white chipping, rubbing, and roughness around nearly the entire perimeter. Its bilingual biography and cartoon are nevertheless readable, and no large missing section is apparent. The combination of a confirmed crease, major corner wear, edge damage, surface scratches, and reverse-border deterioration warrants a conservative GOOD 2 estimate. The complete image and readable back keep it above a poorer designation, but its structural and cosmetic defects prevent a VG assessment. This card is raw and has not been professionally graded, so the grade represents a careful visual estimate based on the supplied scans. Grade Estimate: GOOD 2
