Description

1970 O-Pee-Chee CFL Tommy Joe Coffey #13 Hall of Famer Hamilton Tiger-Cats EX 5 This 1970 O-Pee-Chee CFL Tommy Joe Coffey #13 Hall of Famer Hamilton Tiger-Cats EX 5 card features a genuine Canadian football legend in his number 75 black and gold uniform. Coffey's broad smile and straightforward stadium portrait give the card a friendly personality, while the bold cream border, red name accents and Tiger-Cats emblem anchor it in the visual style of vintage O-Pee-Chee. The front lists Coffey as an offensive end, a period term that reflects how players often filled several roles rather than fitting into the narrow position labels used today. Tommy Joe Coffey was a receiver and place kicker who played 14 CFL seasons with Edmonton, Hamilton and Toronto. He was selected as a CFL All-Star seven times, was a finalist for Most Outstanding Player three times and led the league in scoring in 1962, 1967, 1969 and 1970. His career totals included 650 receptions, 10,320 receiving yards, 63 receiving touchdowns and 971 points. Coffey won Grey Cups with Hamilton in 1967 and 1972 and was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1977. Those achievements make this card far more than a common vintage portrait and give it lasting appeal for collectors of Hamilton football history. The card is part of the 115-card 1970 O-Pee-Chee CFL set, a Canadian release recognized for colourful stadium portraits and bilingual information on the reverse. The reverse pictured here is a Canadian O-Pee-Chee bilingual back, not a puzzle back. It identifies Coffey as a non-import Hamilton offensive end, lists West Texas State, provides English and French text, and includes the green cartoon trivia panel about his business interests. The Printed in Canada line completes the Canadian issue profile. The front shows good colour and a clear portrait, though the black uniform and stadium area contain several fine surface marks and faint scuff lines. The upper corners are softly rounded, the lower left corner has light whitening, and the lower right corner has mild wear near the Tiger-Cats logo. The side and lower edges show small intermittent chips consistent with handling, but no clear major crease crosses the card. The reverse has light edge rubbing, minor corner whitening and a few surface hairlines in the black field, while the green cartoon panel remains intact and legible. No writing, tape, missing paper or obvious fold is visible. Centering appears roughly 55/45 left to right and close to even vertically, with the player portrait sitting slightly low within the frame. Because the images were taken through a protective sheet, the estimate allows for uncertainty about shallow sleeve lines and pressure marks. The result is a visually complete, historically important raw card suited to a Tommy Joe Coffey collection, Hamilton Tiger-Cats display or 1970 O-Pee-Chee CFL set. Grade Estimate: EX 5
