Description

1970 O-Pee-Chee CFL Basil Back #88 Name Error Calgary Stampeders VG-EX 4 This 1970 O-Pee-Chee CFL Basil Back #88 Name Error Calgary Stampeders VG-EX 4 card is an excellent choice for collectors who enjoy the unusual details found in vintage Canadian football issues. The front shows Calgary centre Basil Bark in a low pre-snap stance at the stadium, surrounded by the bright red Calgary Stampeders uniform, a green field and the recognizable Stampeders logo. The name line is historically significant because the card prints Basil Back rather than Basil Bark. That spelling is not a modern seller variation or a custom alteration. It is the printed name error associated with this card number and should be preserved in the listing because collectors often search both Basil Back and Basil Bark when building a 1970 O-Pee-Chee CFL collection. The set is a 115-card Canadian football release produced during a period when sports cards were becoming an important record of professional players across the country. Its design has a strong late 1960s and early 1970s feel, with a large action portrait, a warm cream caption area, red highlights and a team emblem integrated into the image. Bark was a Canadian offensive lineman who played five seasons with Montreal before being traded to Calgary before the 1970 season. His Stampeders career became one of durability and leadership, including Western All-Star seasons and a place on Calgary's 1971 Grey Cup championship team. The reverse in the photographs is a Canadian O-Pee-Chee bilingual back, not a puzzle back. English and French biography text appears on the black field, while the green illustrated trivia panel adds the set's distinctive cartoon element. The reverse also carries the card number, Calgary team identification, player measurements, non-import designation and Printed in Canada wording. The front has attractive colour and a clean player image, but the corners are visibly softened. The upper left and upper right corners show light rounding, the lower left has a small touch of whitening, and the lower right edge has mild wear near the logo and caption area. There is modest edge chipping along the lower and side borders, plus a few small surface marks and faint lines across the sky and uniform. The reverse shows more visible handling, with light vertical scuffs in the black text area, small edge nicks, and mild whitening around the corners. No clear deep crease, paper loss or writing is visible, although the sleeve creates reflections and makes shallow wrinkles difficult to separate from card wear. Centering is approximately 55/45 left to right and close to even top to bottom on the front, with the reverse appearing similarly aligned. This copy is offered as a raw vintage card and is priced for its honest mid-grade presentation rather than an optimistic near-mint claim. Grade Estimate: VG-EX 4
