Description

1970 O-Pee-Chee CFL #84 Jack Abendschan Hall of Fame Saskatchewan Roughriders EX 6 In an era before specialized kicking units, the most valuable lineman on many CFL rosters was the guard who could also split the uprights, and nobody did it better than Jack Abendschan. This listing is the 1970 O-Pee-Chee CFL #84 Jack Abendschan, a Canadian Football Hall of Fame guard and placekicker and one of the true keys to the Saskatchewan Roughriders dynasty of the late 1960s and early 1970s. The 1970 O-Pee-Chee CFL set lists him as an offensive guard and place kicker, and his production in both roles made him a fixture on all-star ballots for nearly a decade. Born on December 18, 1942, Abendschan came to Saskatchewan from the University of New Mexico and spent his entire eleven year CFL career with the Roughriders from 1965 through 1975. He was a five time CFL All-Star, earning the honour in 1967, 1969, 1971, 1972 and 1973, and a Western All-Star in six straight seasons from 1966 through 1973. He won the Dave Dryburgh Memorial Trophy in 1969 and 1970 as the West's top scorer, and his biggest single kick came in the 1972 Western Conference final, when his field goal downed Calgary and sent the Riders to the Grey Cup. Abendschan was also a key member of the 1966 championship club that delivered the franchise's first Grey Cup title. The Canadian Football Hall of Fame inducted him in 2012, cementing a career that is still celebrated on the Prairies. measured from the scan, this example is nicely centered with balanced white borders on the front, corners that are sharp with only a hint of rounding, minor edge wear consistent with raw vintage card stock, and no creases, wrinkles or surface marks visible in the scan. This is the Canadian O-Pee-Chee bilingual back, printed in English and French on a predominantly black reverse with white lettering and green accents, and it is not a puzzle back. The EX 6 grade reflects a well-preserved raw card with strong colour, a clean unmarked reverse and fine eye appeal for a card now in its mid-fifties. For Hall of Fame collectors and Roughriders faithful, this is one of the most desirable cards in the 1970 set. Grade Estimate: EX 6
