Description

1970 O-Pee-Chee CFL #83 Cliff Shaw 1966 Grey Cup Champion Saskatchewan Roughriders VG-EX 4 Every great championship roster is built on the two-way players who never make the front page, and in 1960s Saskatchewan those unsung contributors were exactly the men this 1970 O-Pee-Chee CFL set immortalized. This listing is the 1970 O-Pee-Chee CFL #83 Cliff Shaw, a Saskatchewan Roughrider listed on the card as an offensive guard and defensive linebacker, a reflection of the small-roster era when Canadian pros routinely played both sides of the ball. Shaw was a Prairie football product through and through, born on August 30, 1943, and he spent his entire CFL career with the Green and White from 1966 through 1970. He arrived just in time for the most famous season in Roughriders history, the 1966 campaign that ended with the franchise's first Grey Cup championship, a 29-14 victory over the Ottawa Rough Riders in Vancouver, and Shaw earned his ring as a member of that legendary squad alongside his brother Wayne. The Shaw brothers became a beloved footnote in Rider lore, two homegrown talents suiting up together during the club's rise from also-ran to champion under head coach Eagle Keys. The 1970 O-Pee-Chee CFL set itself is a collector favourite, a 115 card Canadian issue with clean photo fronts modelled on the 1969 Topps NFL design and bold black bilingual reverses that stand apart from anything printed south of the border. measured from the scan, this example is noticeably off-center left to right, with the image sitting toward the left edge and a wider white border along the right, accompanied by light corner rounding and minor edge chipping typical of a raw card of this vintage, and no creases or wrinkles are visible in the scan. This is the Canadian O-Pee-Chee bilingual back, printed in English and French on a predominantly black reverse with white lettering and green accents, and it is not a puzzle back. The conservative VG-EX 4 grade reflects the off-center front image and light corner and edge wear, while the card still carries bright colour, a clean unmarked reverse and strong eye appeal for a fifty-five year old raw card. For anyone chasing the complete 1970 set, the full Roughriders team run, or the story of the 1966 Grey Cup champions, Cliff Shaw is a genuine and affordable piece of Canadian football history.
