Description

1969-70 Topps Charlie Burns #129 Minnesota North Stars EX 5 The 1969-70 Topps Charlie Burns #129 Minnesota North Stars EX 5 card celebrates a pioneering American NHL player and an important figure in the North Stars’ earliest seasons. Burns appears in a close portrait wearing Minnesota green, with the original North Stars emblem positioned above him. The large red team name, black skate motif and circular center designation anchor the card in the instantly recognizable 1969-70 Topps design. Charles Burns was born in Detroit and raised in Toronto, developing into a resourceful two-way forward at a time when relatively few United States-born players held regular NHL roles. He played for the Detroit Red Wings, Boston Bruins, Oakland Seals, Pittsburgh Penguins and Minnesota North Stars during a career spanning more than 700 NHL regular season games. Burns was known for his intelligence, defensive awareness and willingness to take on difficult assignments. His reputation as a thoughtful student of the game led naturally into coaching responsibilities. During Minnesota’s early years, he served as a player-coach and helped guide the developing expansion franchise. Burns also became closely associated with protective headgear after suffering a serious head injury earlier in his career, making him one of the comparatively uncommon NHL players of his era to wear a helmet consistently. The reverse describes his commitment to remaining an active player despite being offered coaching work and records his career totals through the 1968-69 season. Unlike the Canadian cards in the upper rows of the photographed sheet, this is the United States Topps edition. Its reverse is printed in the United States and uses English-only biography text with a blue and yellow design. It is not a Canadian O-Pee-Chee bilingual back and is not a puzzle back. The front has moderate softness at all four corners, with the lower corners and upper-left corner showing the most visible rounding. The cream borders display uniform age toning, scattered print specks and light chipping along the left, right and bottom edges. Centering is fairly strong for the issue, although the card appears slightly shifted toward the right and sits marginally low within the border. The portrait retains attractive colour and strong contrast, with only minor visible marks. Fine sleeve scratches or reflections cross portions of the scan, and an in-hand inspection would be required to determine whether every line is on the card itself. No clear major crease is visible. The reverse remains bright and readable but exhibits softened corners, perimeter wear and slight discoloration near the edges. A conservative EX 5 estimate reflects the card’s pleasing overall appearance and absence of an obvious crease while accounting for corner wear, minor chipping and age-related surface imperfections. The card is offered raw and ungraded, and the estimate does not guarantee any result from PSA, SGC, Beckett or another grading company. Grade Estimate: EX 5
