1969-70 O-Pee-Chee Danny O'Shea #131 Rookie Card Minnesota North Stars GOOD 2
The 1969-70 O-Pee-Chee Danny O'Shea #131 Rookie Card Minnesota North Stars GOOD 2 combines an appealing close-up portrait with the international story of a Canadian Olympian who became a productive NHL centre. O’Shea’s clean studio image, green sweater, and lace-up collar are surrounded by the signature stick graphic, bold red team name, and green centre medallion that define this popular vintage issue. As a rookie card from the early North Stars period, it offers both player significance and the visual appeal of a classic Canadian hockey set. Before joining Minnesota, Daniel Patrick O’Shea played for Canada’s national program and represented the country at the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble, earning a bronze medal. He moved directly into an important role with the North Stars during 1968-69, recording 15 goals and 34 assists for 49 points in 74 games. Those rookie numbers printed on the reverse capture a strong NHL debut and help explain why the card described him as a matinee idol in Minnesota. O’Shea later skated for the Chicago Black Hawks and St. Louis Blues, then returned to Minnesota hockey with the Fighting Saints of the World Hockey Association. Across his NHL and WHA career, he supplied size, playmaking, and a physical edge at centre. This recognized rookie card therefore connects Olympic hockey, NHL expansion, and the colourful WHA chapter that followed. Card number 131 has an especially engaging reverse, with period biography, a shamrock cartoon referring to O’Shea’s Irish heritage, and complete rookie-season statistics. It is an original Canadian O-Pee-Chee issue. The back is bilingual in English and French and carries the Printed in Canada notation. It is not a puzzle back. The front is fairly well centered, with a slight left-to-right shift that does not distract from the portrait. All four corners are rounded, with heavier softness and fibre exposure at the upper-right and lower corners. A noticeable horizontal surface line crosses the portrait area, while additional short wrinkles or crease lines appear near the right edge and lower-left region. Because the card is shown through a protective sleeve, the longest fine line could be partly influenced by the plastic, but the surrounding corner and surface wear is clearly visible. Edge chipping and whitening occur around the cream border, especially along the bottom. The back shows rounded corners, a pronounced crease or wrinkle near the upper-right, abrasions along the top blue edge, and wear at both lower corners. Small scuffs and age marks are distributed across the turquoise field. A conservative GOOD 2 grade recognizes that the card is intact, colourful, and fully readable, but visible creasing, rounded corners, and persistent edge wear prevent a higher raw estimate. It is an appealing, budget-friendly rookie with real Olympic and Minnesota hockey context, well suited to a vintage binder, player collection, or affordable North Stars display.
