1966 O-Pee-Chee Batman #7 A Batly Gesture Riddler Back Batman Series Dark, moody and almost cinematic, the front of card 7 is a tight low light shot of Batman in cowl and cape, the kind of shadowed frame that reminded 1966 audiences the character had roots in pulp detective fiction even while the show played everything for laughs. The reverse titles the card A Batly Gesture and recounts the exchange in which Batman asks do you understand, Robin, and the Boy Wonder replies yes, but holy etiquette, it is not polite to point. That one line captures the entire comic register of the series, a straight faced Caped Crusader paired with a sidekick whose holy exclamations became national catchphrases in 1966. The show arrived in January of that year and immediately generated a merchandising boom, with the card rights handled by Topps in the United States and by O-Pee-Chee for the Canadian market. The O-Pee-Chee cards carry a Printed in Canada line and use the same Riddler's Riddle decoder reverse, here posing the question what would Robin say if he saw the Penguin, followed by the three row scrambled letter grid.
