1969-70 O-Pee-Chee Don Awrey #203 Boston Bruins Defenseman Hockey Card Raw VG-EX 4

Description

1969-70 O-Pee-Chee Don Awrey #203 Boston Bruins Defenseman Hockey Card Raw VG-EX 4 Don Awrey #203 is a strong vintage Boston Bruins defense card from the iconic 1969-70 O-Pee-Chee set, offering collectors a well-preserved example of a young blueliner who contributed to Boston's competitive core during the late 1960s and early 1970s. The 1969-70 O-Pee-Chee series stands as one of the most revered vintage Canadian hockey card issues, celebrated for its bilingual English-French card backs, thick premium stock, vibrant team-color borders, and classic illustrated cartoon mascots that have defined Canadian sports memorabilia culture since the original release. Produced by the Toronto-based O-Pee-Chee Gum Company, these cards feature the distinctive teal reverse design with the circular "O-PEE-CHEE" logo, bilingual statistical blocks, and playful mascot illustrations—hallmarks that collectors and grading services instantly recognize and seek. Card #203 depicts Don Awrey wearing the white Bruins jersey with the circular "DEFENSE" designation at lower right and the vintage Bruins crest at center, capturing the physical, stay-at-home style that defined his early career. Awrey joined Boston as a promising young defenseman and quickly established himself as a reliable presence on the back end, providing the defensive stability that allowed the team's offensive stars to flourish. His career extends well into the 1970s, making this 1969-70 card a valuable snapshot of his development years. Examining the front image, the card shows authentic raw condition with wear consistent with careful vintage storage in a clear sleeve but without professional grading. The top-left corner displays mild softness with a very small nick, while the bottom-right corner is relatively sharp with only light surface wear. The edges exhibit minimal rounding at the top and left sides, with no significant chipping or tearing visible. Centering is acceptable, with Awrey's portrait positioned slightly left of center—typical for this era's printing variance and not a detraction from overall appeal. The card surface retains good color saturation with only light hairline scratches visible under inspection; the white jersey and yellow shoulder stripes remain vivid against the green background. The back image confirms the bilingual O-Pee-Chee design is fully intact: both English and French statistic lines are legible, the cartoon mascot and "O-PEE-CHEE" branding are preserved without fading, and the 1969-70 season stats—Games, Goals, Assists, Points, and Penalty Minutes—are clearly printed in black ink against the teal background. The bottom record line is fully readable, and the vertical right-margin bilingual text is complete. The back corners show minor wear matching the front, with no creasing, water damage, writing, or tape present. Given the minor corner softening, acceptable centering, minimal hairlines, and fully intact reverse design, I conservatively grade this card at VG-EX 4. It is a solid raw specimen that clearly exceeds VG quality and offers excellent display value. Listed at store.piskun.ca by Alex Collect, this Don Awrey #203 is an ideal addition for any 1969-70 OPC Bruins collector. Grade Estimate: VG-EX 4
