Description

1969-70 O-Pee-Chee Gary Doak #202 Boston Bruins Defenseman Hockey Card Raw VG 3 Gary Doak #202 is a sought-after 1969-70 O-Pee-Chee Boston Bruins defenseman card that represents both the defensive backbone of the franchise and the classic visual charm of the O-Pee-Chee era. The 1969-70 O-Pee-Chee set is widely regarded as one of the finest vintage Canadian hockey card productions, defined by its thick card stock, bilingual English-French statistical backs, vibrant team-color borders, and whimsical cartoon mascot illustrations that have made these cards enduring collectibles across Canada and the United States. Printed by the Toronto-based O-Pee-Chee Gum Company, the series delivers exceptional print quality with deep color saturation and clear typography that remain impressive even after more than half a century of aging. Card #202 features Gary Doak in his defensive posture, wearing the white Bruins jersey with the circular "DEFENSE" designation at lower right and the classic yellow-and-black crest at center. Doak joined the Bruins as a young defenseman and quickly established himself as a reliable blueliner capable of playing a responsible two-way game. His inclusion in this 1969-70 series highlights his role during a period when Boston was transitioning from its Original Six identity into a modern expansion-era competitor, and his steady defensive play provided crucial minutes on a team that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 1970. Collectors seek Doak cards not only for his on-ice contribution but also because his high card number in this series places him among the later-series insertions that complete a full-set run. Examining the front image, the card presents very well for its age. The corners are largely sharp with minor softness detectable at the top-left and bottom-right corners—typical for raw cards that have been handled gently but not professionally graded. The edges show minimal wear with only slight rounding at the top and bottom margins, and no significant chipping, tearing, or corner breakage is visible. Centering is good, with Doak's portrait positioned near the vertical center and slightly above the horizontal midpoint, which is entirely acceptable for this era's production standards. The card surface retains good gloss with only a few light hairlines visible upon close inspection; the green background and yellow trim remain vibrant. The back image reveals the classic bilingual O-Pee-Chee reverse fully preserved: the English and French stat lines are clearly legible, the cartoon mascot illustration is intact without fading or cracking, and the 1969-70 season statistics—including Games, Goals, Assists, Points, and Penalty Minutes—are printed in crisp black ink against the teal background. The bottom record line is clearly visible. The back corners show only minor wear, with no creasing, water staining, writing, or tape residue. Given the sharp overall appearance, excellent color retention, intact bilingual text, and minimal surface wear, I estimate this card at EX-MT 6. It falls just short of NM condition due to the minor corner softness, but it offers exceptional display quality for a 1969-70 OPC Bruins defense card.
