1971 O-Pee-Chee
AL Strikeout Leaders Sam McDowell Mickey Lolich Bob Johnson 71 (VG 3)
Step back into the golden era of baseball pitching dominance with this classic piece of cardboard history! This 1971 O-Pee-Chee McDowell Lolich Johnson card showcases the incredible arms that ruled the American League during the 1970 season.
The 1971 O-Pee-Chee set is legendary among collectors for its notoriously difficult black borders. Produced in Canada by O-Pee-Chee in partnership with Topps, these cards are highly susceptible to chipping and edge wear, making any surviving copy a treasured addition to a vintage collection. This particular card, number 71, immortalizes the top three strikeout artists of the American League from the preceding 1970 season.
At the top of the card is the great Sam McDowell of the Cleveland Indians, who absolutely dominated batters in 1970 with a staggering 304 strikeouts. Below him are Mickey Lolich of the Detroit Tigers, who fanned 230 batters, and Bob Johnson of the Kansas City Royals with 206 strikeouts. Lolich, in particular, was a heroic figure for the Tigers, famously winning three complete games in the 1968 World Series. Seeing these three power pitchers grouped on a single vintage card is a fantastic reminder of an era when starting pitchers were expected to go deep into games and rack up massive strikeout totals.
Condition Report:
Our raw grade estimate for this card is VG 3. As is typical with the sensitive black borders of the 1971 O-Pee-Chee set, there is noticeable chipping along the edges on the front, particularly on the top and left sides. The corners show visible softening and rounding consistent with a card that has been handled and loved over the decades. The centering on the front is shifted slightly but presents well overall. Turning the card over, you will see the classic O-Pee-Chee bilingual back featuring French and English text, which is a hallmark of these Canadian-printed gems. The back shows some natural age tanning and corner wear, but the text remains completely legible and sharp.
