1966 O-Pee-Chee Batman Following the Clue #40 Canadian Printing Black Bat Series Batman and Robin swing into the Gotham night on Bat ropes in this 1966 O-Pee-Chee Batman Following the Clue #40, one of the few vertically composed cards in the Black Bat series and one of its most striking images, with the Dynamic Duo suspended high above the city as they race toward the Riddler's trap. Norman Saunders' painting over Bob Powell's layout captures the capes billowing, Batman's clenched jaw, and Robin's outstretched leg with the kinetic flair that defined the set, and the composition evokes the famous wall climbing and rope swinging sequences of the 1966 ABC television series starring Adam West and Burt Ward, with Frank Gorshin's Riddler as the breakout villain of that first season. The 55 card Black Bat set was the first Batman series Topps issued in 1966 and it remains the definitive vintage Batman card set. This copy is the Canadian O-Pee-Chee printing, identified by the T. C. G. PRTD. IN CANADA line on the reverse, produced in London, Ontario, and seen far less often than the American Topps version, which gives it extra appeal to collectors assembling the Canadian variation. It is not a bilingual back and not a puzzle back; the reverse is the standard English only orange story back with the running Batman figure, the number 40 inside the black bat logo, and the line No. 5 of 11 Batman vs. The Riddler Cards, placing it in the heart of the Riddler storyline that runs from card 36 to card 46. The story text has Commissioner Gordon relaying the Riddler's newest riddle, why does a fireman wear red suspenders, and Robin declaring the answer almost too easy as the pair swing toward the Gotham Tower penthouse, a perfect slice of the show's tongue in cheek humour. this card shows severe handling wear and surface damage, with several patches of paper loss on the front where the printed surface has been torn away to expose white stock, most prominently on Batman's chest beside the bat emblem, on Robin's arm and cape, and along the right border, plus multiple creases including a diagonal crease across Batman's torso, two crossing creases through the black title box at the lower left, and horizontal wrinkles across the legs, together with all four corners rounded and edge chipping along the top and bottom edges. Centering is roughly 55/45 left to right and about 40/60 top to bottom with the wider border along the bottom. The orange back is toned with heavy edge wear, shows the same creases as pale lines, and has a patch of surface loss in the text panel where a few letters of the Riddler's riddle are missing, though the remainder of the text is legible and there is no writing or tape. Because of the front paper loss combined with multiple creases, we conservatively estimate this card at Poor 1, and it should be regarded strictly as an authentic filler. For a collector building the scarce Canadian Black Bat set on a budget, this original O-Pee-Chee number 40 fills a difficult slot with one of the set's best compositions at a fraction of the cost of a clean copy, and the image remains instantly recognizable from across the room despite its battle scars.
