1972 O-Pee-Chee Tony Gabriel #9 Hamilton Tiger-Cats CFL Hall of Fame Own a cornerstone card of one of Canadian football's greatest clutch performers with this 1972 O-Pee-Chee Tony Gabriel #9 Hamilton Tiger-Cats CFL Hall of Fame legend. Tony Gabriel is a name that instantly evokes Grey Cup magic for two franchises, first as a young offensive end in Hamilton and later as a record setting star in Ottawa, and this early second year card captures him right before his legend fully exploded. In 1972 Gabriel helped the Tiger-Cats capture the Grey Cup on home turf at Ivor Wynne Stadium by hauling in three critical late passes to set up the winning field goal, a moment still replayed in Hamilton lore. After moving to Ottawa in 1975 he became the most dominant Canadian receiver of his era, posting four straight 1000 yard seasons, winning four Schenley Most Outstanding Canadian Awards, capturing the Schenley Most Outstanding Player Award in 1978, and catching the iconic winning touchdown in the 1976 Grey Cup to give Ottawa a 23 to 20 victory over Saskatchewan. He retired with 614 receptions for 9832 yards and 69 touchdowns, still holding Ottawa records for career receiving yards and touchdowns, and was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1985. This 1972 O-Pee-Chee issue is highly sought after because it is from his Hamilton years wearing number 77 with the bright yellow Tiger-Cats border that makes these cards pop in any display. The front portrait shows a youthful Gabriel with curly hair and a confident smile that would become familiar to fans for the next decade. The back is the classic Canadian O-Pee-Chee bilingual back with English and French biography, blue and green printing, and a cartoon noting his Syracuse University record setting career where he set marks for most receptions and most touchdown passes, not a puzzle back. Front centering is about 65/35 left to right with the yellow border slightly heavier on the left side, corners show gentle softening especially on the upper right with no major creasing or white breakthrough, edges are clean with only minimal chipping on the lower yellow frame, surface gloss remains strong with excellent color saturation and no print lines, back shows typical cardboard darkening with sharp blue border and fully legible bilingual text, no pen marks or erasures, light handling wear at corners only. The card presents as a strong example of a Hall of Fame star from a condition sensitive set known for centering issues and dark photos. Grade Estimate: EX 5
