1972 O-Pee-Chee CFL Jim Young #40 BC Lions VG-EX 4 Meet Dirty Thirty. This 1972 O-Pee-Chee CFL Jim Young #40 BC Lions card features one of the most beloved Canadians ever to play the game, captured in his orange number 30 jersey with the bold LIONS banner across the top of the classic 1972 design. Jim Young, nicknamed Dirt for his fearless, mud caked style, starred at Queen's University before a brief stint with the Minnesota Vikings, then returned home to join the BC Lions in 1967 and never left, playing 13 seasons in Vancouver through 1979. He won the Schenley Award as the CFL's Most Outstanding Canadian in 1970 and again in 1972, the very year this card was issued, and he was named a CFL All-Star multiple times as both a running back and a wide receiver. Young retired as the Lions' all-time leader in receiving yards and touchdowns, had his number 30 retired by the club, and was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1991. The bilingual back of this card, printed in blue and green with the O. P. C. marking and the Printed in Canada line, lists him at six feet and 205 pounds as a non-import out of Queen's University, mentions the 1970 Schenley Award and his Hamilton roots, and includes the cartoon panel noting that he is in the property development business. The front shows light rounding at all four corners with the lower right corner showing the most softening, minor edge wear along the top and left borders where the blue ink shows slight chipping, and no creases or wrinkles visible under close inspection. Centering is shifted toward the upper left with the right and bottom borders noticeably wider. The back is clean and bright with sharp text, no writing, no stains, and only minor corner wear. Balancing the pleasant eye appeal against the corner softness and off-centering, I am conservatively estimating this raw card at VG-EX 4.
