1970 O-Pee-Chee CFL Roger Perdrix #41 Bilingual Back Ottawa Rough Riders EX 5 The photograph says everything about the player, a broad shouldered lineman set low in the grass with number 51 across his back and a half grin that suggests he knows exactly how the next snap is going to go. This 1970 O-Pee-Chee CFL Roger Perdrix #41 Bilingual Back Ottawa Rough Riders EX 5 is the sharper of two copies from the same sheet and it presents beautifully for a fifty five year old Canadian issue. Perdrix was born in Boston in 1943, played his college football at the University of Cincinnati, and spent his entire professional career in Ottawa from 1966 through 1974, nine seasons of trench work that produced Grey Cup championships in 1968, 1969 and 1973. He was known around the league for hitting far above his listed weight, a reputation the card itself acknowledges in both languages, and he was a constant on the line through the transition from the Russ Jackson era into the mid seventies. His card run is short, essentially the 1970 and 1971 O-Pee-Chee CFL issues, which is exactly why Ottawa team collectors tend to snap up clean copies of this one when they surface. The set itself contains 115 cards, was printed in Canada, follows the second series 1969 Topps NFL layout, and closes with six special feature cards covering award winners, coaches and the CFL numbering system. The reverse here is a Canadian O-Pee-Chee bilingual back, white text on black stock with the biography given in English and French, a green cartoon panel noting that Roger is hard hitting for size, and the Printed in Canada line at lower left. It is not a puzzle back, and the data strip lists him as an import at six foot one and 235 pounds out of the University of Cincinnati. the front is completely free of creases and wrinkles, the colour is bright with good gloss retention in the grass and jersey stripes, the corners are mostly square with light wear at the bottom right and a whisper of fuzz at the top left, edge chipping is minimal with one small nick along the bottom border, and centering measures close to 50/50 left to right and about 45/55 top to bottom, while the black reverse remains solid and clean with light whitening along one edge and slight softness at the bottom left corner. The conservative grade estimate of EX 5 reflects nothing more than those minor corner touches and the trace edge wear typical of black backed stock, and an in hand inspection could reasonably support a half point higher.
