The 1970 O-Pee-Chee CFL Wayne Giardino #39 Bilingual Back Ottawa Rough Riders GD 2 offered here is a filler grade example of a card that most Canadian collectors still chase, because the 1970 O-Pee-Chee CFL release remains the definitive vintage snapshot of the league at its late sixties peak. The set runs 115 cards, was printed in Canada, and borrows its clean white bordered photographic design from the second series of 1969 Topps football, with the final six cards devoted to award winners, coaches and an explanation of the CFL jersey numbering system. Giardino himself is one of the great character stories of the era. A Florida State product who was born in Peterborough and therefore counted as a Canadian on the roster, he won the Gruen Trophy as the East's best rookie in 1967, became a fixture at linebacker while moonlighting at fullback, and won Grey Cups in 1968, 1969 and 1973 alongside Russ Jackson, Whit Tucker and Joe Poirier. He later coached the Ottawa Sooners and the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees and served as director of player personnel for both Ottawa and Hamilton before his induction into the Ottawa Sport Hall of Fame in 2014. The reverse is a Canadian O-Pee-Chee bilingual back with English and French biography text, white type on black stock, the familiar green cartoon panel noting that Wayne lives in Almonte, Ontario, and the Printed in Canada credit. It is not a puzzle back. this copy shows multiple long diagonal creases running from the upper left of the photograph down through the playing surface, with additional wrinkling toward the lower right of the image, all four corners are rounded and frayed rather than merely soft, edge chipping is heavy along the right and bottom borders where the cream stock has flaked back into the image area, and centering measures roughly 50/50 left to right, while the black reverse displays widespread scuffing with white paper fibres showing through, perimeter chipping and matching crease lines, though there is no pen, pencil or tape. The conservative grade estimate of GD 2 is driven entirely by the creasing and corner rounding, since the card is otherwise complete, uncleaned and free of writing, which makes it an ideal low cost placeholder for a set builder.
