Produced by O-Pee-Chee in London, Ontario, the 1970 CFL issue spans 115 cards and was sold only in Canada, which makes surviving copies meaningfully scarcer than American football cards of the same vintage. The reverse of this card is the genuine OPC bilingual back, with the player biography rendered in both English and French over the trademark black background, and it is not a puzzle back. The green cartoon box proudly announces that Al was named the EFC Rookie of the Year in 1969, while the bio recounts his rise through Rosemount High and the Terrebonne Trojans, mentions his Physical Education degree, and lists the University of Kentucky beside his six foot one, 195 pound frame. Phaneuf's sophomore campaign coincided with one of the great stories in Canadian football, as the 1970 Alouettes surged to a Grey Cup championship, and every Montreal card in this set now doubles as a piece of that title run. The front features the same striking portrait as our other copy, with Phaneuf in his green number 34 jersey and oversized shoulder pads set against a saturated blue sky, but this example is priced for the collector who wants the card without paying mid-grade money. this copy shows a noticeable ding and paper wear at the upper right corner, moderate rounding on the remaining corners, light chipping along the right and bottom edges, centering slightly toward the left, and surfaces that remain free of any significant crease on the front, with standard period wear visible on the dark bilingual back. The corner damage is the defining flaw, so we grade conservatively at VG 3 and let the price reflect it honestly.
