1970 O-Pee-Chee CFL Dick Smith #106 Montreal Alouettes VG-EX 4 Add a member of the 1970 Grey Cup champion Alouettes to your collection with this 1970 O-Pee-Chee CFL Dick Smith #106 Montreal Alouettes VG-EX 4 vintage single. The 1970 O-Pee-Chee CFL set numbers 115 cards and stands as one of the most attractive Canadian football issues ever printed, with bright full-colour photography on the front and a fully bilingual English and French back printed in Canada, not a puzzle back, featuring the trademark black reverse and lime green cartoon box. The cartoon on this card notes that Dick used to play defense exclusively, and the biography explains that the speedy import out of Northwestern University was very quick and, in his initial season, rapidly gained the respect of defensive units around the league. Standing six feet and 215 pounds, Smith is pictured in full stride on the front, tucking the football in his green number 39 Alouettes uniform against a lush green practice field and deep summer sky, one of the more dynamic action poses in a set filled with static crouches. Smith's versatility made him a valuable piece for Montreal, a club that put everything together in 1970 and claimed the Grey Cup, giving every Alouette in this set added championship-season appeal. American talent that came north often provided the CFL with its most exciting players, and Smith's Northwestern pedigree and two-way flexibility are exactly the kind of story that makes vintage Canadian football collecting so rewarding. this copy displays lightly touched corners with slight rounding at the lower tips, a few tiny nicks of edge chipping along the white border, centering shifted modestly toward the left, and clean surfaces on the front with only routine period handling wear on the black back, which shows wear more readily than lighter card stocks, and no crease is visible on either side. Weighing the corner wear against the strong colour and crease-free surfaces, we assign a conservative raw grade of VG-EX 4, and we would rather under-promise than over-grade. The 1970 OPC CFL issue was distributed only in Canada in modest quantities, so mid-grade survivors like this one are genuinely scarce more than fifty years later. Perfect for Alouettes team collectors, 1970 set builders and fans of championship rosters, this card ships securely sleeved from our Ontario shop. Grade Estimate: VG-EX 4
