Description

1970 O-Pee-Chee CFL Joe Zuger #15 Grey Cup MVP Hamilton Tiger-Cats VG-EX 4 This 1970 O-Pee-Chee CFL Joe Zuger #15 Grey Cup MVP Hamilton Tiger-Cats VG-EX 4 card showcases one of the most versatile stars in Hamilton Tiger-Cats history. Zuger is pictured in the club's black and gold uniform, wearing number 9 and looking directly toward the camera in a classic stadium portrait. The front identifies him as a quarterback, but Zuger's actual career was broader than that single position. He served Hamilton as a quarterback, defensive back and punter, making him an ideal subject for a vintage CFL card from an era when elite players were often expected to contribute in multiple roles. Zuger joined the Tiger-Cats in 1962 and quickly made an impact. In his first game as the starting quarterback, he threw for 572 yards and eight touchdowns, a performance that remains one of the most memorable statistical debuts in CFL history. He helped Hamilton win Grey Cups in 1963, 1965 and 1967, and he was named Grey Cup Most Valuable Player in the 1967 championship. After his playing career, he became Hamilton's general manager and later helped oversee the club's 1986 Grey Cup team, giving his collecting story an important front-office chapter as well. This card comes from the 115-card 1970 O-Pee-Chee CFL set, a Canadian issue known for vivid player photography and bilingual backs. The reverse shown here is a Canadian O-Pee-Chee bilingual back, not a puzzle back. It lists Hamilton, Arizona State, the import designation and quarterback position, presents English and French biography text, and includes the green cartoon panel describing Zuger as an accomplished painter. The Printed in Canada wording confirms the Canadian production. The front shows a complete portrait with good black, gold and cream colour, although the dark jersey has several fine surface scuffs and small marks. All four corners display light rounding, with the lower corners showing the most whitening and the upper edge carrying a few small handling nicks. The long edges have modest chipping but no visible split. The reverse has light rubbing in the black field, small edge nicks and mild corner whitening, especially near the exposed outer edge. Fine hairlines are visible in the photographed surface, with no clearly confirmed deep crease, tear, writing or paper loss. Centering appears about 55/45 left to right and slightly low from top to bottom, still attractive for a vintage raw issue. The estimate is intentionally cautious because the card remains in a sheet protector and because sleeve reflections can disguise shallow wrinkles. This is a strong team-collector card with substantial historical interest beyond its printed quarterback designation. Grade Estimate: VG-EX 4
