1971 O-Pee-Chee Hal McRae #177 Cincinnati Reds
Own an early card of one of the American League’s defining designated hitters with the 1971 O-Pee-Chee Hal McRae #177 Cincinnati Reds. McRae is pictured ready to swing in Cincinnati colours, framed by the dramatic black border, orange REDS header and vivid green and white typography of the classic 1971 design. His distinctive signature across the lower photograph is a printed facsimile created as part of the card, not a hand signed autograph. This single is the Canadian O-Pee-Chee edition, which is scarcer than the corresponding American Topps release and carries a yellow and black reverse printed in Canada. The back includes English and French biography text, making this a Canadian O-Pee-Chee bilingual back, not a puzzle back. Collectors prize this issue for its lower Canadian distribution and notorious condition sensitivity, since the black border exposes even the smallest edge touch or corner chip. Hal McRae was still a young Cincinnati player when this card appeared, several seasons before he found his ideal role with the Kansas City Royals. In Kansas City he became one of the early stars of the designated hitter era, winning the 1976 American League batting title with a .332 average and leading the league in doubles twice and runs batted in once. McRae earned three All-Star selections, accumulated more than 2,000 career hits and became a central figure on Royals teams that repeatedly battled for the postseason, including the club’s 1980 American League championship squad. He later managed the Royals and Tampa Bay Devil Rays, extending a major league life that already made him one of the sport’s most recognizable competitors. This Cincinnati card predates those signature achievements and offers collectors an appealing early snapshot before his rise to stardom in Kansas City. The reverse presents his statistics through 1970, physical details, bilingual biography and a black and white portrait in O-Pee-Chee’s distinctive yellow format. The front displays white flecking along the top edge and both vertical black borders, with additional rubbing on the bottom edge; the upper left and upper right corners show visible softening, while the lower corners have lighter wear and maintain reasonable shape. The image remains bright with good contrast, and centering appears attractive but slightly shifted from left to right. Tiny pale marks can be seen in the black header and across portions of the photo, although the protective plastic sheet introduces dust and scuffs that cannot be assigned to the card with certainty. The reverse has uniform age toning, mild edge rub and gently touched corners, with no visible handwriting, paper loss or large stain. No obvious crease, deep wrinkle or bend is confirmed by the front and back scans. A conservative EX 5 estimate reflects the card’s strong central presentation and apparently intact body while allowing for fragile-border chipping, corner wear and surface uncertainty under the sleeve. For Reds, Royals and designated hitter collectors, this is a scarce Canadian issue with excellent career significance and authentic vintage appeal.
