1971 O-Pee-Chee Don Gullett #124 Rookie Card Cincinnati Reds Secure an early card of a cornerstone Big Red Machine pitcher with the 1971 O-Pee-Chee Don Gullett #124 Rookie Card Cincinnati Reds. Gullett appears in a youthful glove pose against a clean blue background, surrounded by the striking black border and orange REDS title that make the 1971 design one of the most recognizable in vintage baseball. His full Donald Edward Gullett signature is printed as part of the card image and is a facsimile, not a hand signed autograph. Card #124 is widely collected as Gullett’s rookie card, adding an important first-year designation to an already desirable Canadian issue. The reverse is the yellow and black O-Pee-Chee version printed for Canada, with player information presented in both English and French. This is a Canadian O-Pee-Chee bilingual back, not a puzzle back. Compared with the American Topps edition, the Canadian O-Pee-Chee release had more limited distribution, while its fragile black borders and characteristically imperfect cutting make clean examples especially elusive. Don Gullett reached Cincinnati as a 19 year old in 1970 and immediately handled meaningful innings for a pennant winner. The hard throwing left hander became an essential member of the rotation as the Reds developed into the Big Red Machine, helping Cincinnati win the 1975 and 1976 World Series. He then joined the New York Yankees and earned another championship in 1977, giving him rings with two of the decade’s defining franchises. Injuries shortened his career, but Gullett still produced an outstanding 109 and 50 record and later returned to Cincinnati as a respected pitching coach. His combination of youthful dominance, October experience and championship associations makes this rookie appealing to Reds collectors, Yankees collectors and hobbyists building vintage pitcher collections. The back captures the very beginning of that story with his 1970 statistics, bilingual biography, physical details and black and white headshot. The front shows visible whitening at the upper left and upper right corners, with the upper right appearing more rounded, intermittent chipping along the full top edge and right border, and lighter wear along the left and lower edges; the lower corners are softened but retain their basic shape. The portrait has attractive colour, the facsimile signature remains bold and centering appears close to balanced with a slight horizontal shift. Small pale flecks and fine scuffs are visible on the black field and blue image area, although sleeve dust and plastic marks may account for some of them. The reverse has even yellow stock toning, modest corner rub and light perimeter wear without visible writing, major staining or paper removal. No certain full crease or deep wrinkle is visible through the protective sheet. A conservative VG-EX 4 estimate is appropriate because the card’s strong presentation and apparent structural integrity are tempered by obvious black border chipping, corner rounding and photo-only inspection. This scarcer Canadian rookie offers genuine vintage personality and a direct link to three World Series championship clubs. Grade Estimate: VG-EX 4
