1973-74 O-Pee-Chee Philadelphia Flyers #NNO Team Logo Pushout Insert 1st Series
$10.00
There is no crest in hockey that carries more menace than the winged P of the Philadelphia Flyers, and in 1973-74 that logo became the banner of the Broad Street Bullies, the team that outworked, outhit and ultimately outlasted the Original Six by winning the Stanley Cup as the first expansion-era franchise ever to do so. O-Pee-Chee seeded these gum-backed pushouts one per pack in first series wax of its 1973-74 issue, and the Canadian printing declares itself with bilingual instructions on the front, PUNCH OUT, WET BACK AND PRESS ONTO ANY SURFACE FOR TEN SECONDS and ENLEVEZ EN POUSSANT, HUMECTEZ LE DOS ET COLLEZ SUR N’IMPORTE QUELLE SURFACE EN PRESSANT PENDANT DIX SECONDS, making this the version collectors of the Bullies era seek for their sets. Raw Grade Estimate: VG-EX 4.
1973-74 O-Pee-Chee Philadelphia Flyers #NNO Team Logo Pushout Insert 1st Series
There is no crest in hockey that carries more menace than the winged P of the Philadelphia Flyers, and in 1973-74 that logo became the banner of the Broad Street Bullies, the team that outworked, outhit and ultimately outlasted the Original Six by winning the Stanley Cup as the first expansion-era franchise ever to do so. This 1973-74 O-Pee-Chee Philadelphia Flyers #NNO Team Logo Pushout Insert 1st Series decal renders the winged P in black inside its circular border with the orange dot at its heart, the exact emblem that Bernie Parent, Bobby Clarke, Bill Barber and Dave Schultz wore while turning the Spectrum into the most intimidating address in the sport. O-Pee-Chee seeded these gum-backed pushouts one per pack in first series wax of its 1973-74 issue, and the Canadian printing declares itself with bilingual instructions on the front, PUNCH OUT, WET BACK AND PRESS ONTO ANY SURFACE FOR TEN SECONDS and ENLEVEZ EN POUSSANT, HUMECTEZ LE DOS ET COLLEZ SUR N'IMPORTE QUELLE SURFACE EN PRESSANT PENDANT DIX SECONDS, making this the version collectors of the Bullies era seek for their sets. Flyers memorabilia from the championship window is a collecting category of its own, and an unused decal is a small time capsule of the spring of 1974, when expansion hockey finally topped the mountain. Clarke took the Hart Trophy that same spring while Parent backstopped the run with historic goaltending, and the Spectrum's orange and black became the colours every established club feared, which is the championship context that gives this little decal its oversized appeal. Bullies-era paper has only appreciated as the legend grows, and unused pushouts with the gum intact are now recognised as some of the purest survivors of Philadelphia's greatest sporting decade. the front presents deep black ink with the logo centred and the circular border complete, the corners show only light softness, and the edges are free of chipping. The reverse, however, carries a small white scuff or paper spot near the top edge of the otherwise clean adhesive-backed board, along with light even toning and the die-cut circle outline, and we state explicitly that this is the Canadian O-Pee-Chee bilingual instruction front with a blank gum reverse, not a puzzle back nor a bilingual back design. With a strong front held back by the visible reverse scuff, the conservative raw estimate is VG-EX 4, a fair and honest placement for a championship-era survivor that still displays beautifully.
