SOLD 1973-74 O-Pee-Chee New York Islanders #NNO Team Logo Pushout Insert 1st Series
$14.00
Few logos in hockey announce a dynasty before it happens, yet the roundel of the New York Islanders, with its interlocked NY, its orange silhouette of Long Island and its hockey stick trailing a puck, became the banner of four straight Stanley Cups before the decade was out. O-Pee-Chee included these gum-backed pushouts in first series wax packs of its 1973-74 issue, and the Canadian identity of the insert is confirmed by the bilingual front instructions, PUNCH OUT, WET BACK AND PRESS ONTO ANY SURFACE FOR TEN SECONDS and ENLEVEZ EN POUSSANT, HUMECTEZ LE DOS ET COLLEZ SUR N’IMPORTE QUELLE SURFACE EN PRESSANT PENDANT DIX SECONDS, a pairing that separates the Canadian run from the instruction-free American logo inserts of the prior year. 1973-74 O-Pee-Chee New York Islanders #NNO Team Logo Pushout Insert 1st Series
Few logos in hockey announce a dynasty before it happens, yet the roundel of the New York Islanders, with its interlocked NY, its orange silhouette of Long Island and its hockey stick trailing a puck, became the banner of four straight Stanley Cups before the decade was out. This 1973-74 O-Pee-Chee New York Islanders #NNO Team Logo Pushout Insert 1st Series decal captures the crest in its earliest form, from the very seasons when the Islanders were a struggling expansion franchise becoming something else entirely, powered by the arrival of Denis Potvin, the first overall selection of the 1973 draft, and by the gathering core that would soon make the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum the loudest barn in the sport. O-Pee-Chee included these gum-backed pushouts in first series wax packs of its 1973-74 issue, and the Canadian identity of the insert is confirmed by the bilingual front instructions, PUNCH OUT, WET BACK AND PRESS ONTO ANY SURFACE FOR TEN SECONDS and ENLEVEZ EN POUSSANT, HUMECTEZ LE DOS ET COLLEZ SUR N'IMPORTE QUELLE SURFACE EN PRESSANT PENDANT DIX SECONDS, a pairing that separates the Canadian run from the instruction-free American logo inserts of the prior year. Early Islanders memorabilia has only grown more desirable as the dynasty's legend has deepened, and an unused decal with the adhesive untouched is a remarkably pure survivor of 1973-74, a season in which the young Islanders took real playoff steps toward greatness. Potvin's arrival changed the franchise's trajectory overnight, and by the time this decal reached wax packs the Coliseum crowd already sensed that the orange and blue were building toward something historic, which is precisely why early Islanders paper survives in such small numbers today. the front shows saturated blue and orange with the island map crisply registered, the circular logo centred with even margins inside the die-cut ring, corners that remain sharp, and edges that show only the faintest handling at the lower left. The reverse is the plain brown adhesive-backed stock with the circular cut line, clean and free of stains or tape, and to be explicit for the catalogue this is the Canadian O-Pee-Chee bilingual instruction front with a blank gum back, not a puzzle back nor a printed bilingual back. With eye appeal at the top of the group and only negligible handling to note, the conservative estimate is EX-MT 6, a grade that respects both the quality of this survivor and the caution raw grading requires.
