Description

1970 O-Pee-Chee Dave Tobey #27 British Columbia Lions VG 3 The 1970 O-Pee-Chee Dave Tobey #27 British Columbia Lions VG 3 card is a charismatic vintage CFL collectible offered at an accessible condition level. Tobey appears in a classic linebacker stance, wearing number 51 and staring directly toward the camera with his hands positioned above his knees. The pose, white and orange Lions uniform, green turf, old stadium seating, and intense blue sky combine to create a memorable image of Canadian football at the beginning of the 1970s. The roaring British Columbia lion emblem at lower right adds further display appeal for team collectors. O-Pee-Chee produced this Canadian series as a 115-card set, using a design closely related to the second series of 1969 Topps football. The CFL edition stands apart through its Canadian players, stadium backgrounds, and bilingual reverse text. On this card, Tobey’s biography is presented in both English and French beside a green cartoon feature. It is an authentic Canadian O-Pee-Chee bilingual back and not a puzzle back. Tobey attended the University of Oregon before joining British Columbia, and the reverse describes him as a second-year Lion and one of the Western Football Conference’s leading linebackers. The linebacker position was particularly demanding in Canadian football because defenders had to react to a wide field, backfield motion, and offences designed to gain ten yards within only three downs. Tobey’s low, prepared stance visually communicates the balance and quick reaction time required for that role. The card therefore offers more than a player portrait. It is a compact historical document featuring vintage equipment, a period CFL venue, an early Lions identity, and O-Pee-Chee’s distinctive Canadian production. This example has a confirmed crease, which is the principal technical defect and prevents it from qualifying for a higher grade despite its strong colour and complete image. The corners exhibit moderate softness and rounding, with visible handling at the tips. The cream front borders show age toning, scattered marks, and small areas of edge chipping, while the surface has light wear consistent with storage and handling. Centering is serviceable but uneven, with modest differences between the side borders and slight factory-cut irregularity. On the reverse, the black perimeter reveals obvious white chipping and rubbing, particularly around the corners and sections of the upper and side edges. The card number, biography, player information, and cartoon remain fully readable, and no major paper loss or writing is apparent. The confirmed crease, together with corner wear and edge chipping, supports a conservative VG 3 estimate. The card remains a desirable original set-filler with an attractive front presentation, but the structural crease rules out VG-EX or EX. This is a raw, ungraded card, and the estimate is based only on the supplied front and back photographs. Grade Estimate: VG 3
