Description

1969-70 Topps Tom Williams #128 Olympic Gold Minnesota North Stars EX 5 The 1969-70 Topps Tom Williams #128 Olympic Gold Minnesota North Stars EX 5 card combines early North Stars history with the legacy of one of American hockey’s most celebrated international victories. Williams appears in a close portrait wearing Minnesota colours, with the original North Stars crest above him and the bold red team name beneath the photograph. The black skate illustration, blue wing circle and cream border create a classic display that immediately evokes hockey’s late 1960s expansion era. Born in Duluth, Minnesota, Tom Williams emerged as one of the leading American players of his generation. His defining achievement came as a member of the United States team that captured the gold medal at the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley. That triumph was the first Olympic hockey gold medal in United States history and remains a landmark in American sports. Williams scored in the decisive medal-round victory over Czechoslovakia, contributing directly to the championship performance. He subsequently joined the Boston Bruins and became one of the relatively few American-born regulars in the NHL during the 1960s. Williams spent several productive seasons in Boston before joining his home-state Minnesota North Stars. He later played for the California Golden Seals and Washington Capitals, extending a professional career that connected the Original Six era, the first great NHL expansion and the league’s continued growth during the 1970s. The reverse highlights his Minnesota roots, Boston tenure, injury history and membership on the 1960 United States Olympic team. A cartoon recalls his nickname Lightning Skates, while the statistical panel records 232 career points through 1968-69. This is the United States Topps edition with an English-only blue and yellow back and printed-in-USA identification. It is not a Canadian O-Pee-Chee bilingual back and is not a puzzle back. The corners have moderate softness, with rounding most apparent at the upper-right and both lower corners. The cream border shows age toning, tiny dark specks and light chipping along the bottom and right edges. Centering is moderately shifted toward the left, creating a narrower left border and more space beside the skate graphic on the right. The portrait remains colourful with appealing contrast, although small print marks and light surface wear are visible. Some apparent lines may be reflections or scratches on the protective sleeve rather than defects on the card. No definite major crease is evident in the supplied photographs. The reverse has corner softness, perimeter wear and light discoloration but remains bold and fully legible. A conservative EX 5 estimate recognizes the strong overall eye appeal, intact surface and absence of an obvious crease while accounting for corner wear, minor edge chipping and imperfect centering. This is an ungraded raw card, and the photographic estimate cannot guarantee a grade from any professional service. Grade Estimate: EX 5
