1972 O-Pee-Chee Jim Stillwagon #32 Toronto Argonauts A legendary Ohio State résumé and a prominent role in Toronto’s defensive front give the 1972 O-Pee-Chee Jim Stillwagon #32 Toronto Argonauts card outstanding crossover appeal. Stillwagon is pictured in number 68, kneeling beside his helmet in a full-length field portrait surrounded by the vivid red frame and turquoise ARGONAUTS lettering that define this team group. The simple presentation lets the player and period uniform carry the design, while the fibrous edge texture offers the familiar character of vintage Canadian O-Pee-Chee production. This card comes from the company’s final dedicated CFL set, a 132-card issue that combined thirteen players from each of the league’s nine teams with fourteen Pro Action cards and one checklist. Its audience extends beyond CFL set builders to Toronto collectors, Ohio State Buckeyes fans and hobbyists pursuing award-winning college football greats. The 1972 O-Pee-Chee Jim Stillwagon #32 Toronto Argonauts represents an athlete whose dominance helped redefine the middle guard position at the college level. Stillwagon was a central figure on Woody Hayes’s powerful Ohio State teams. He helped the Buckeyes complete an undefeated national championship season in 1968 and earned consensus All-America honours in 1969 and 1970. In his senior season he won both the Outland Trophy as the nation’s outstanding interior lineman and the inaugural Lombardi Award, created to honour an exceptional lineman who embodied Vince Lombardi’s qualities. Stillwagon was also recognized as the 1970 UPI Lineman of the Year and finished fifth in Heisman Trophy voting, a remarkable result for an interior defender. Chosen in the fifth round of the 1971 NFL draft by Green Bay, he instead signed with Toronto and immediately became part of the Argonauts club that advanced to the 1971 Grey Cup. Stillwagon became a three-time CFL All-Star during five seasons with Toronto, contributing strength and intensity at defensive tackle. He entered the College Football Hall of Fame in 1991, and Ohio State later enshrined him in its Varsity O Hall of Fame. Those honours make his early professional football card a meaningful extension of one of college football’s great defensive careers. This original card is ungraded and has been assessed from the supplied scans while sealed inside a protective pocket page. The front retains attractive red and turquoise ink, a clear portrait and nearly even white margins. Centering is shifted only slightly, and the full frame remains visible. All four corners show modest softening, with the lower-right and upper-left displaying the most obvious touches of rounding. Fine white fibres and small nicks appear along the edges and coloured border; the lower edge is visibly rougher and slightly uneven in the traditional O-Pee-Chee manner. Several pale specks are present in the sky, jersey and grass, including two more noticeable white spots to the left of the player. A short scuffed or faded area also appears near the lower red frame. The reverse has uniform cream toning, strong blue-and-green printing, mild perimeter wear and a small blue smudge near the centre dividing area. Scattered tiny age or print flecks are visible, but no significant paper loss is apparent. No definite full crease, wrinkle, tear, writing, pinhole or heavy stain can be confirmed. Fine lines crossing the images may be on the plastic sleeve rather than the card. The reverse is the authentic Canadian O-Pee-Chee bilingual English/French player-biography back, highlighting Stillwagon’s All-American background at Ohio State. It is not a puzzle back.
