1972 O-Pee-Chee Chip Barrett #38 Toronto Argonauts The 1972 O-Pee-Chee Chip Barrett #38 Toronto Argonauts card is a classic defensive-back portrait from the final O-Pee-Chee CFL card release. Barrett appears in jersey number 30 in a ready stance, framed by the vibrant red border and turquoise ARGONAUTS wordmark that unify Toronto’s cards in the set. His pose and the open practice field create a crisp snapshot of professional football before elaborate studio photography and digital design became standard. This original Canadian issue comes from a 132-card set containing thirteen player cards for each of the CFL’s nine clubs, followed by fourteen Pro Action subjects and a checklist. Collectors value the release for its modest print distribution, period photography and bilingual backs, as well as for its connection to a memorable era of Canadian football. The 1972 O-Pee-Chee Chip Barrett #38 Toronto Argonauts is therefore a useful set-building single and a focused collectible for fans of the 1971 Grey Cup team, University of British Columbia football and underappreciated defensive playmakers. A Toronto native and University of British Columbia alumnus, Chip Barrett built a solid five-season CFL career as a safety and defensive halfback. He played two years for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1967 and 1968, then joined the Argonauts for the 1970, 1971 and 1972 seasons. Across 74 regular-season games, Barrett recorded 17 interceptions and returned them for 309 yards, an average of more than 18 yards per return. He intercepted four passes in each of his two Winnipeg seasons, collected two picks for Toronto in 1970 and returned one of those for a touchdown, then added three interceptions in 1971 and four more in 1972. Barrett was part of the Toronto secondary that helped the Argonauts win the 1971 East and reach the Grey Cup against Calgary. His interception in the Eastern Final also contributed to the club’s path through rival Hamilton. While stars often dominate vintage checklists, cards like Barrett’s document the depth players who made a championship run possible and give a complete team set its historical substance. His career totals, local roots and role on one of Toronto’s most remembered squads make the card more compelling than its common-card status might suggest. This original card is ungraded and has been reviewed from the supplied scans while enclosed in a protective page. The front displays clear player detail and attractive red and turquoise ink. Centering is generally respectable, with the frame sitting only slightly toward one side and a minor vertical shift. The corners have light vintage softening, particularly at the upper-left and lower-right, while the perimeter shows the fibrous, somewhat uneven cut frequently encountered on O-Pee-Chee cards of this period. A mild yellowed or tan area is visible near the top white border, along with scattered tiny pale specks in the sky and coloured frame. The red border has a few pinpoint white nicks but no large area of colour loss. The back is evenly age-toned and fully legible. Its edges show modest roughness, and a small light oval mark or print void is visible in the blue title area near one side. No definite full crease, wrinkle, tear, writing or pinhole can be confirmed; no heavy stain penetrates the card, although the light top-border discolouration should be disclosed. Several long, fine lines in the scan are consistent with the sleeve surface and may not be on the card. The reverse is the correct Canadian O-Pee-Chee bilingual English/French player-biography back, noting that Barrett was regarded as the Argonauts’ fastest defensive back. It is not a puzzle back.
