1972-73 O-Pee-Chee Gerry O'Flaherty #278 Rookie Card Vancouver Canucks
Step back into the era of the Summit Series and the birth of the WHA with this 1972-73 O-Pee-Chee Gerry O'Flaherty #278 Rookie Card Vancouver Canucks collectors love for its hot-pink studio backdrop and unmistakable early-seventies charm. Fresh from Alex Collect, this is the true rookie card of one of the NHL's rare American-born players of the period. Born in Pittsburgh in 1950, O'Flaherty was hockey royalty of a sort — his father, Johnny "Peanuts" O'Flaherty, was a former NHLer and the chief scout who helped build the expansion Canucks. Gerry was plucked from Toronto in the 1972 Intra-League Draft and went on to become a dependable two-way winger in Vancouver, posting multiple strong seasons including a 20-goal campaign in 1974-75 as the Canucks won their first division title. The card itself is quintessential 1972-73 O-Pee-Chee: the tan border, the funky sideways team lettering, the crimson nameplate and the classic stick-in-rink Canucks logo. The reverse is the authentic Canadian O-Pee-Chee bilingual back, printed in Canada with English and French text, a cartoon of a Canucks skater, and his early career record — this is not a puzzle back, as the 1972-73 OPC hockey issue used full bilingual bios throughout. centering is shifted noticeably toward the right border on the front, with the left tan border visibly wider than the right; the top edge shows the rough, fuzzy factory cut O-Pee-Chee is famous for, which collectors accept as authentic and desirable. Corners show light touches of wear with mild softening at the upper right, and there is faint toning to the cream borders consistent with age. The back is clean, free of writing, tape, or paper loss, with even vintage toning and no creases detected under close inspection. Because of the off-centering and the light corner wear, we grade this conservatively rather than optimistically — a card must earn its number, and centering alone caps this one below near-mint. Our estimate is honest EX 5 territory, meaning strong eye appeal for a fifty-plus-year-old rookie with flaws fully disclosed. For Canucks team-set builders chasing the club's formative years, or collectors of U. S.-born NHL pioneers, this is an affordable, authentic piece of 1972 hockey history that displays beautifully despite its age. Add this genuine O-Pee-Chee rookie to your collection today — vintage Canucks cards from the pink-background era rarely stay in stock long.
